Donations desperately needed to amputate puppy's leg!

Please read and pass on to your contacts.  Alissa Johnson is a local, independent animal rescuer in New Orleans and needs financial help in order to get this puppy the surgery she needs.

Thanks,
Traci

Cookie's Story:
Her femoral head is broken. She is in a lot of pain and needs to have her leg amputated very soon. She also has the remnants of mange. The skin scrapings were negative though. She has horrible yeast infections in both ears. One ear is swollen and the vet thought it was from chronic ear infections and never having them treated. She has hookworms. Her heartworm test was negative, but will be retested later. She is very underweight. She is only 6 months old & weighs 18 lbs. She is also in heat.

What you can do to help:
Donate towards Cookie's surgery, by contacting Nancy at Lakeview Veterinary Hospital at 504-482-2173. Cookie will be listed under my name: Alissa Johnson. Nancy works Monday ?Friday from 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Please ask for Nancy to cut down on any confusion.

Background Information:
A coworker of mine was very upset by the sight of a neglected puppy in his neighborhood and asked me to check it out. He walked past the puppy every day and he couldn't stand to look at the poor thing any longer. I was horrified when I went to the house last Saturday and saw the poor baby. This was a very nice neighborhood.

The puppy was very underweight. She was limping and looked as if her leg was broken. She was tied to a pine tree, without any shade. The only shade she got was when the sun went down and she was able to get in the shadow of the house. Her only shelter was a plastic Pet-Mate crate. When I went on Sunday, the puppy was choking herself to get in the shade from the house. The poor dog had hardly any water and was so hot.

Here are photos taken of the puppy at her location: http://s258. photobucket. com/albums/hh276/johnsa1/Cookie/07%2020%202008/

I managed to find the owner home Monday night. I spoke to her for an hour and a half before she agreed to relinquish the puppy. She did not believe there was anything wrong with the puppy. I gave her a list of problems wrong with the dog. She told me I was just making that up to make her feel bad. She never noticed the puppy had a broken leg until I pointed it out. She told me it must have happened recently or she would have noticed. The puppy had gotten into a neighbor's rat poison about a month ago. The neighbor told the owners about the poisoning, who then informed him the puppy was fine. The neighbor felt bad so he took the puppy to the vet and paid the bill. The owner told me this was why the dog was thin. She kept telling me that God healed the rat poisoning and God would heal the broken leg also. The puppy wanted the owner's attention, so she would jump on her owner. The owner would pet her but did not want the puppy on her so she would just shove her down. Since the puppy doesn't have use of one of her back legs, she would fall every time.

I learned from the next door neighbor that he is the one who fed and watered the dog daily. The family goes out of town quite often and leaves the dog for weeks at a time in their backyard. They had never taken the dog to the vet. Their fence is broken and the owner thought the puppy needed exercise so she would just let her roam the neighborhood for exercise.

I took the poor baby to the vet Tuesday.

The surgery for her amputation is $700. They will also spay her at the same time. The vet said the poor puppy is in horrible pain and needs to have the surgery ASAP. I am asking for donations to help pay for this poor baby's surgery.

If you would like to donate towards Cookie's surgery, please contact Nancy at Lakeview Veterinary Hospital at 504-482-2173. Cookie will be listed under my name: Alissa Johnson. Nancy works Monday ?Friday from 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Please ask for Nancy to cut down on any confusion.

If you are not comfortable, calling in a credit card number to the vet, my address is PO Box 87562, New Orleans, LA 70187. I'd prefer the donations paid directly to the vet, so this baby can have her surgery ASAP. I don't want her to suffer any longer. Please notify me by email of the donation made to the vet, so I can give the appropriate people thanks.

I am currently working with the Humane Society of Louisiana to charge the owners with cruelty.

This poor baby has the best personality. She's so happy. She wants to kiss every person she meets and gets very upset when people walk past her without paying attention to her.

Here are current photos of her: http://s258. photobucket. com/albums/hh276/johnsa1/Cookie/07%2023%202008/

Cookie will be up for adoption as soon as she heals from her surgery. If you'd like to give this poor baby a wonderful life please contact me at alissacjohnson@gmail.com . She's already crate trained. She loves to sit in your lap and will give kisses all day long.

Glad to hear that Cookie will get the care that she needs. I seriously don't get how people can treat animals that way!! PS- none of the links worked to see the pictures.
