Pmeg - re: buying a baby a seat on a flight

bonus to buying a seat - another free carryon bag allowed on board!

also, infants sometimes pay 50% of a full human's fare. check with an airline if they offer a discount.

but you probably take the airline which doesn't charge for 1st checked bag anyway.

Re: Pmeg - re: buying a baby a seat on a flight

  • I don't know if you saw it (it dropped off the front page with all the SS excitement), but I highly recommend buying a seat. I flew with Bacon to WI when she was ~6 mos., and we bought her a seat. She slept the whole time, and I didn't have to hold her.

Aside from ease of travel (IMO), I just felt safer with her in her carrier strapped into a seat. I would never ride in a car with her in my lap: I couldn't imagine doing it in a plane.

But be warned: They make you take the baby out of the carrier at security. Yes, you're obviously smuggling bombs in the baby seat. Morons.

  • I'm leaning towards buying the seat, partially for safety reasons. The carseat we're probably going to end up purchasing is FAA okayed and I think I'd feel more comfortable with him in that than in my arms if there is turbulence. We'll need the car seat anyways as we'll be driving a rental when we get to MN/WI. I'm still trying to figure out if they'll let me use one of my frequent flier tickets for a baby. I'm not actually concerned about bags, I just wonder if having the infant seat in the airport with us is just going to be another big thing to lug around.

Yes, it is.  And it is the major suckage.  But it's worth having.

If you don't mind having a lap baby, you can always get a car seat from the rental car co. (if you trust them).  FWIW, I made H schlep that carseat through the airports and I wore DD.  It was a fair trade-off.
