I didn't read the replies.
Her edit note makes it look like she's making excuses for him telling her over the phone. I think his "excuse" makes it even worse. So things went bad with the other woman, she threatened to tell, and dude realizes he's about to be left with nothing. He's just sorry he didn't get away with it.
