Weebly? Or another free webspace site?

One of my skids wants to create her own website. She has looked at weebly which has a free website service. It looks like it has an interface that would be good for a novice web designer, since my skid has no html or design experience. But I read some reviews online that weren't too favorable. Does anyone have experience with weebly or another site that might be good?

I'm going to look into whether my own paid hosting will allow me to support more than one domain, but even if it does.. she would still have to use something like front page to create her site, which would be more complicated. (Though, it could be better for her in the long run.)

Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks :o)

Re: Weebly? Or another free webspace site?

  • Have you looked at Google Sites? I've used Weebly without any big problems, so I'm not discouraging that. But Google Sites is Google. So it's a well known, well supported entity. Oh, and there is only a free version unlike Weebly that has a free and a paid version (if I remember).

  • I haven't yet. I've had my own domain for ten years, so I honestly haven't looked at free webspace since then. I didn't even know that geocities is yahoo now. Embarrassed

It sounds like she wants the space to be able to support her own domain, which weebly says that it does, but I don't know if they just really mean that the domain would forward or not.

  • Why does she want a website?  If it's to learn web design, then she could easily use a subdomain of your website (such as http://subdomain.website.com/).  Even if she has no HTML skills now, the best way to learn is just to dive in - that's what I did.  There are great HTML tutorials all over the internet.

Besides, since every website is based in HTML it's great to learn at least the basics.  It allows you to do creative things and to be able to know what can and can't be done on the internet.  Even on WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web design interfaces like Google Sites, there is always the option to go into the HTML and make modifications there.

It's far more satisfying to know that you can create a website from scratch on your own than to always have to rely on WYSIWYG interfaces, in my opinion.

  • well, she is thirteen, so i think she just wants a website because she thinks it would be cool. i don't think she really has any interest in learning the coding behind websites, unfortunately.

she doesn't want a subdomain... and she doesn't want a blog, which i thought would be easier for her than her own site.

So she wants a website, but what does she want a website FOR?  If it's not a blog, then will it be something that she can throw pictures on?  Somewhere that she can just write "this is my website" and leave it at that?  Knowing what she wants it for might be helpful in this situation.

Also, she has no interest in coding but she knows about subdomains?

Whatever the case, give Google Sites a try.  Simple, free, and WYSIWYG.

  • I have one major question for you.

WHY does she want a site? If she wants it to do nothing with it, I wouldn't make her one.

  • I think she just wants a place where she can post her thoughts, pictures, videos that she likes, etc. I did try explaining she could do all of this with a blog, but I think she likes the novelty of having her own domain.(and after talking with her a little more, i might be able to talk her into a domain that forwards to a place like blogspot.)

And I definitely will not be making one for her. If she wants to have her own website, I will help her get set up and assist her when she needs help, but am not going to do it all. Obviously she doesn't need a website, but if it's something that she wants to devote her time and energy towards, I think it could be a good learning experience for her, which would be lost entirely if I did all of the work.

What exactly does she think a blog is, anyway?  Regardless of the domain name/website, what you've described is a blog.  You said you tried to explain that she can do that on a blog - no, that IS a blog.  It doesn't have to be on blogspot.com or wordpress.com to be a blog - people have blogs on their own domains all the time.  That might be a misconception you want to clear up with her.

You can easily point a blogspot blog to a personally owned domain, so that's definitely an option.  I believe there are instructions on the blogspot for how to set this up, but it's not hard at all.

As to your original question of a place that offers free, easy-to-use hosting and design, blogspot is a good choice for beginners.  There are also plenty of design templates out there for free.

In other words, she wants a blog. It's not that you can do that with a blog. That's what a blog is.
