Hello. DH and I are visiting Alaska in a few months. DH is a big fisherman so I really want him to have some great experiences. We will be visiting for 8 nights and I was wondering if this sounds OK. 2 nights in Anchorage, 3 nights in Seward, and 3 nights in Homer. Would you go to Seward or Homer first and which place would be the best to Heliport from (to view glaciers)? Are there any other places that would be best for fishing in the South-central area. Or any other towns to visit instead of these that would be better? Hotel/Food recommendations would be greatly appreciated. (Not necessarily Hotels...we would really love anything off the beaten path and something eclectic and great). Or maybe some bio recommendations if you don't want to type a lot. I'm sure you ladies get at lot of this. Thanks so much.
Re: A little bit of Alaskan travel help please!
It depends what kind of fishing you want to do. I would suggest doing a day or two of fishing on the Kenai river. The best base for that is probably Soldotna. I have no idea if there even are glacier viewing tours out of Seward or Homer.
There are lots of big hotels in Anchorage for you to stay in. The best local hotel is the Hotel Captain Cook. There are lots of good restaurants in and around Anchorage. A few I would recommend are Glacier Brewhouse, Humpy's, Simon and Seafort's, Moose's Tooth, Double Musky, and Snow City Cafe (especially good for breakfast).
You wrote that you are coming to Alaska in a few months...so the end of Sept? Most fishing charter business's and tourist attractions close around Labor Day. The best time to travel to Alaska for fishing and siteseeing is the month of August.
For Glacier viewing contact a helicopter business out of Girdwood. It is about 30 minutes south of Anchorage.
Fun to stay at Bed and Breakfasts out of Seward and Homer.
Best places to eat in Homer: Fat Olives, Lands End, Cosmic Kitchen. Check out the local coffee shops Hopped Up on Espresso and Captains Coffee.
Take a Fjords Tour out of Seward and Seward also has better Fishing.
In Homer contact Big Bear Charters and they will be a great bet for a day on the water.
On your way to Homer - in Anchor Point check out the Norman Lowell Gallery...you won't be disappointed.
Write back with any other questions. I have lived on the Kenai Peninsula for the past 22 years
