Walmart vs. Publix

2»

Re: Walmart vs. Publix

  • Since we live less than a mile from a Publix, that's where we do our regular grocery shopping. We make about a monthly trip to Sam's Club to stock up on anything possible that we can buy in bulk from there, both because it saves money and because it means I can shop less frequently (I think buying things like toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo/conditioner only once ever few months is great!)

We don't have the Neighborhood Walmart stores around me; just the Super Walmart. The one nearest to us isn't a pleasant place to shop for us so we just rather stick with Publix.

  • I refuse to shop at Wal-mart -- totally refuse.

I honestly think Wal-mart is evil. They are anti-union, anti-fair wages, anti-just about everything. The way they treat their employess is horrible and what they do to towns across the country is insane. Sorry to rant, but if people looked past some of the their lower prices they would see how bad they really are.

I LOVE Publix and will always shop at Publix.

I suggest Wal-mart lovers to see Wal-Mart:The High Cost of Low Price. It is a documentary but it will really open your eyes to what is going on. (And a lot of more bad things have happened since the documentary was made.)

    Sorry to get on a soapbox . . . but I really don't like Wal-Mart!!!!

If I'd been able to find my damn soapbox, that's exactly what I'd have said. ;)

Can't STAND the company. At all. No Sams Club, either.

  • Thanks cmeon. I know a lot of people that don't "buy" Wal-mart is evil thing . . . but the facts are too strong.

Oh, I don't go to Sam's Club either. I go to Costco and love it.

One thing I forgot to mention is how little Wal-Mart gives to charity -- it is beyond sad. Hello??!!!!Ttheir employees have a fund and they raised 5 million dollars to help other Wal-Mart employees in need (because they don't make much) . . . the Walton family only gave $6,000. Pathetic! Ugh - sorry I am ranting again.

Florida Wal-Marts have a distinct honor of having more of their kids on Medicare than any other state. (Again, the facts don't lie) It's because Wal-Mart doesn't let most of their employees qualify for medical insurance and heaven forbid that would actually allow the employees to add their children to the program if they did qualify. AAUGH.

I won't even go into Wal-Mart and politcs.

Please try to shop elsewhere . . . you have no idea how much Wal-Mart undercuts wages and their employees in general.

  • I used to shop at Walmart all the time until I found out how bad they are (see Stumpy's posts).  Now, I do most of my grocery shopping at Publix (hit the sales).  I gave up my Sam's Club membership, even though I get it free through work.  They got me Costco, which is great.  I'm not saying I'd never shop at Walmart (if I need something at midnight, I might go there!), but I do avoid it as much as possible.
  • We have a Walmart Neighborhood Market and we LOVE it.  It is always cheaper than Publix unless Publix is having their BOGO sales then it isn't.  I usually food shop at both places.  I just go to Publix to get the stuff I need that's on sale and then get the rest at WalMart.

  • Jen, are you talking about the WalMart on Goldenrod near Lee Vista? I agree it's pretty nice for a WalMart, but I'm still not crazy aout them.

For one thing, never, ever again will I buy anything perishable there. The last time I went to one of those neighborhood grocery stores, I noticed they had yogurt well past the expiration date. That should have warned me not to buy meat, but I no, I bought ground beef because it looked fresh. When I got it home and opened it, there was brown meat hidden under the red meat.Ick!

Also, their prices are not always better than Publix!!  For example, the same brand cat litter I get at Publix at $8 for 20 lbs.(sometimes $6 when it's on sale) was $10 for 14 lbs. at WalMart Neighborhood Market or whatever it's called.

Actually , their prices aren't always better, period. We were pricing digital cameras and found one at Circuit City for $40 less than teh exact same one at WalMart.

Costco is fabulous for saving money on groceries. We buy our meat there, then vacuum seal and freeze it, and we buy lots of other staples there.  You do have to be selective and avoid impulse purchases, but as long as you do that you'll do very well. Everything else (things Costco doesn't have, or has in too large quantity) we buy at Publix, except for produce which I try to get at a local market b/c it's usually better quality.

  • There is an Aldi coming to St. Cloud.
  • This is a random place to put this, but, whatevs. :)

I want a Trader Joes. It would solve all our problems- because we'd all be too in love with them to even think about shopping anywhere else. WHY does Joe hold out on us poor Floridians?!

  • I will say I do almost all of my shopping at Publix.  I do go to the same new one on Goldenrod as everyone else.  I usually just go for my $4.00 meds, DVDs and books.  Its a much nicer store than the one on 436.  I refused to even go near there for the last year.  It completely gives me the creeps AND I dont shop without Jerry.

I do shop @ Sams on Goldenrod.  My FIL works there and Jerry gets his card for free because of his Dad.  We buy all paper, dog food, laundry items from there.  I do buy some meats there and just split it up.  I also buy soaps and tylenol.   I ALSO buy my gas there.  Much cheaper than most places and Im near there so it works out.

I would like to save $$$ on grocerys however my Mom refuses to use items from W/D (completely understood) or off brands.  It drives me nuts since shes not the one paying the bill however we have to live with her so my sanity is most important.

  • I'll say it again . . . Publix rocks!
