Poll: A Baby Name...

My hubby and I were discussing baby names today over our lunch date (no I am not preggers!) and we really like the name Parker. This is my question, we had different ideas on where it would be a girl name or a boy name. I am not going to tell you which one I picked as to not make you bias to me :) hehe.

Therefore, Parker: for a girl or for a boy??

Re: Poll: A Baby Name...

  • To me it is a boy's name - I grew up with a girl named Parker and people always thought she was a boy.  It might be different now but the only kids I know named Parker are boys.  But I like the name!

  • I've never known anyone by that name, but it sounds more like a name for a boy to me.

  • It's much more common for boys, but, it's getting more popular for girls (like so many perfectly good boy names- UGH).
  • I would say Parker seems like it would be a boys name. There is a little boy named Parker at my DS's daycare. There was an old tv show called Parker Lewis Can't Loose and it was about this teenage boy. There are alot of names out there that can go either way!
  • I bet if you name a girl Parker, her peers will have no problem with the name, but all the people from our generation or older will constantly be saying "isn't that a boy's name?!?"

I'm with cmeon - so many boys names are becoming girls names!  But that's always been the case.  Like did you know Beverly, Ashley, and Shannon all used to be boys names?

  • It is a boy name to me.
  • I can see it going either way.  Kinda like Blake.  I've known Parker's who were boys.  But Parker POsey the actress had been around forever and she's girl.  I think Parker is a cute girl's name.

However, I think I'm biased towards boyish names for girls.  I want to name my girl Payton and B thinks it's a boys name because of Peyton Manning.  But I love "P" girls names and I think Payton is a great girls name.  (My other fave is Paige.)

  • I think it leans more towards a boys name too...
  • Boy, isn't it Rosie O'Donnell's son's name?

Dh's brother has a guy friend named Parker.

  • Just my opinion, no flames please.  Nobody else has really agreed with me but I like Parker better for a girl.

Parker for a little boy is cute but then when he grows up I just can't imagine a grown ass man being called Parker in a business meeting, fishing, hunting, or doing any other older manly thing.

I think its very cool for a girl though.

Uh-huh!  I totally said the same thing.  Well, I guess I said I could see it  either way but that means I definitely thinks it's a cute girl's name!  Stick out tongue

  • Sounds like a last name to me. That seems to be the trend, in fact one of the names we are thinking about(and probably going to end up using) is a last name.

As far as Parker for a first name, I say boy. The only Parker I know of is Lynette's son on Desperate Housewives.

Oops!  You're right.  I skimmed through:)

  • Well, I am a teacher -- so I have taught a million kids with a million different names!

The only girl that I know with the name Parker is Parker Posey. Actually her middle name is Christian which is also more of a boys name. (She was named after a supermaodel Suzy Parker) I digress!!!!

I think Parker can work for a girl, but it is more commen for a boy to be named Parker. (I have taught several boys named Parker)

As far as Payton - I have taught several girls named Payton. (All totally cute by the way) I have never taught a boy named that -- no matter the spelling.

Honestly, almost any name is fair game for a boy or girl . . . I am sometimes shocked by what people decide to name their kids! CRAZY!

Then again, their are a TON of names that go both ways -- so it wouldn't be odd for a man or a women to be called just about anyhting in a board room or out fishing, etc. To each his own!

Woo hoo!  Thank you stumpy!!  I was stoked when I read this and called B into the room and made him read it too!  I think now he actually believes that it could be a girls name and not sound weird. Now I just have to be okay with the fact that B's last name starts with a P and if I name my girl with a P name (which all my faves are) then her initials will be "PeePee."  Ugh.  Is that horrible to do to a child?

But your experience does make me wonder if maybe Payton has always been more of a girl's name and Peyton Manning being famous has just just changed people's perceptions of the name more recently.  Hmmmm. . .

My best friend's initals are P.P. and she doesn't have a problem with it! No one has ever made fun of her in that sense.?

  • Parker sounds more like a boy's name to me.  I just can't imagine it on a girl.  But then again, I like the name Elliott for a girl (like the character Elliott from Scrubs), and I'm sure people probably think that's weird lol.

  • I've always thought of Parker as a boy's name...mainly because I named a cat of mine Parker, and he was a boy ;)
