Key Largo or Key West

Looking to take a trip to either Key West or Key Largo.....

Never been to the keys and looking for some info. All I know is that Key West and Key largo are a good distance apart...

DH and I are looking for a nice, affordable place to stay on the beach.....

But, I have heard that there is not much of a beach scene in the keys... is that correct? DH and I are big beach people, and love people watching, so we actually do not want a private beach...

Would also love a place with some good places to eat!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Key Largo or Key West

  • Key West... definitely. There is A LOT more shopping, dining, and over all, more to do there. Largo is slower paced. I would recommeding eating at Flogartys on Duval while you are there, and Camille's which is our absolute FAVORITE!

I would also suggest the southernmost house as a place to stay. hth!

  • If you stick with the Keys, definitely Key West, but like you said there are no beaches.  They are terrible and honestly, I don't think it's very fun if you don't have a boat.  I hate going to the keys without a boat!

If you want good beaches and people watching, I would go to South Beach! Beautiful beaches, lots of people, great food, lots of shopping and entertainment.  There are plenty of affordable options as well if you stay at a smaller place and a hotel right outside of the main area.

  • I overlooked the part about the beaches in the Keys. There is a public beach on KW on the atlantic side, but depending on the time of year, it smells like rotten eggs. We never go there. When you search for a place to stay, you can look into if they have there own private beaches. For example, the southernmost house that I mentioned has a private one. I think the Hilton and Marriott do too.

Otherwise, if you really want beaches, I would stay in Miami or Ft Lauderdale.
