Going to Charleston w/ my husband next week. What should we do? Places to eat? What to do for New Year's Eve? Do we need to make reservations anywhere? Is is usually crowded this time of year?
Re: Charleston recs.
Where are you staying? how long will you be here?
There are a lot of fun things to do downtown. I don't know about how crowded it is this time of year. I know that normally in the Winter that tourism slowes down a bit.
Savannah is a good day trip.
My favorite seafood restaurant is Fleet Landing. Southern- Magnolia's and Jestine's.
I generally frown upon the carriage rides because I don't really believe the horses aren't overworked. I know there is a varying degree of opinions on this, but I do know they are out when it's extremely hot in the summer. Charleston is so easy to walk around anyway, you can see plenty on foot.
Boone Hall is a good plantation to see. The Aiken-Rhett House downtown is my favorite historic mansion.
Shop on King Street and in the market area, which is off Meeting Street.
Have fun!
I've never tried it, but heard that Hank's is great sea food (downtown by the market). Try Hominy Grill for brunch or breakfast, its awesome! If you want to dress it up a bit, you could try S.N.O.B., Magnolia, or Cypress.
I'm embarassed to say that I've never been to the plantations, but I've heard that Boone Hall is great.
Places to eat- I've either been to these places or know someone who would recommend them:
nice places:
Cypress (my favorite!)
SNOB
McCrady's
Hank's Seafood
82 Queen
Post House (Mt. Pleasant)
other:
Boulevard Diner in Mt. Pleasant
Sermet's Corner on King St.
Andolini's Pizza
I've never been on a carriage ride, but I've heard they're not all that great, and I will admit that we always make fun of the tourists who go on them. Boone Hall is a great plantation, and shopping down King Street is a lot of fun. There's also a gelato place on the corner of Calhoun and St. George. I know it'll be chilly, but this gelato is so good, that you'll probably forget about how cold it is!

What about New Year's Eve? What do you suggest? We aren't big party people. Would like something nice, but simple. Do we need to make reservations?
Thanks so much for all of your help! Can't wait to visit!
I have heard that Fleet Landing has a flat fee, open bar, food, music, etc on NYE. I have not investigated since we want to stay closer to home due to the drunk drivers, so you can call them and ask about it!
I rec'd Hanks for seafood. It was sooo good!
Not sure about NYE either but I know alot of places are doing stuff. Try searching around this link for ideas!

We did the carraige tour before we moved here and I learned alot from it. There was a recent article in the paper down here about one of the tour companies being fined for the bad care of the horses so that was sad but I think wherever they do carraige rides that's bound to happen. The city is very walkable and they do have walking tours instead of the horse tours. We haven't done any of the plantations either...we are waiting until the flowers bloom...but Boone Hall has a Christams thing going on and so does another one as well.
Thanks for all of your reply's! There seems to be so many places to eat, I dont know how to choose????
Do any of the places have a dress code?
What is the weather going to be like next week?
May have a few more questions, the more I research?
What about Charleston Grill?

Check Yelp.com reviews and the menus online to see what appeals to you.

Most of Chas is casual because there are so many tourists. I spend a lot of time in nice, dark wash jeans, ballet flats or riding boots, and sweaters or jackets
What is the weather going to be like next week?
Expect chilly nights and mornings (30s and 40s) and by noon is generally warms up to 50s or even low 60s.

Don't know much about it, sorry.
