So when do you start potty training?

I know not anytime soon for Ben, but I was just wondering if there is a general age range that you are supposed to start. ?And is it true that boys are harder to train than girls?

Also, he pretty much eats 2, usually 3 "meals" a day now, in addition to nursing every 3-4 hours (except at night), ?and the amount of poopy diaps per day has been like 3-4 lately. ?Does that sound right? ?I mean, I know what goes in must come out, but his poor little bum! ?I got some good diap creme today and hope it helps.

Re: So when do you start potty training?

  • I have seen some people try before 2, but it usually doesn't work.  I have seen from working in EI that boys are often later than girls, keep in mind I am not working with your typical population.

but actually even when I babysat a lot for an agency - lots of dift families, most kids were in their 2s, many boys in their 3s.

but 30 yrs ago it was much more common to potty train closer to 2.  probably cuz of cloth diapers or poor quality sposies.

  • im working with vinny.  he pulls his wet diapers off as soon as he wets.... so i know he knows and a few times even some days in a row weve used the potty, but he is being so. difficult. with this....  but the drs are impressed that hes even slightly ready. i guess 2 is early for a boy but not for a girl.  3  i think is the avg age for a boy.....

and the pooping.... my boys poop like 4-5 times a day. theyve done it foever.  my mom says that shes never seen anyone poop so many times a day but their dr said that as long as theyre consistant, they are fine.  =)  but good god, i cant get over how much they poop!

  • We tried when Drake turned 2 because I wanted him PT'd before Jackson got here and he just didn't get it also we weren't able to stay consistent cause of our house renovations...some days one one bathroom would work while another didn't and quite honestly it was a PITA to do whole being pregnant and cleaning messes off the floor. We tried again at 2.5 but again he didn't get it and again it was a PITA being all huge and trying to get on the floor all the time to clean up messes. So finally at age 3 year and 1 month he GOT IT! It's so nice not having to buy pullups now and only having to buy Jackson diapers!

I really think girls do get it alot faster than boys...all the little girls I know have been PT'd at age 2 or 2 and a couple months....I truly believe it just takes longer for boys to "get it".

Also I think that amount of pooping sounds normal...I don't rememberhonestly ....but now Drake goes once a day sometimes twice and sometimes he'll even skip a day.

  • There seems to be a HUGE age range for starting and successfully completing potty training.  Every kid does things in their own time, and I think that statement is ESPECIALLY true with this.  Some do say that girls are easier than boys to toilet-train, but I'm not sure how true that is in all cases.  For example, my niece just turned 3 last month and wants NOTHING to do with going on the potty AT ALL (though I have to say that I think that has much more to do with my sister's approach to the whole thing - they've been pushing her HARD since she was 18 months).

Jakob is almost 2 1/2 and I just introduced a potty to him very recently (as in a few weeks ago).  I just put it in the bathroom.  I have been bringing him into the bathroom with me every now and then for a long time, though, when I "went potty".  I've always described what I was doing to Jakob and just made a game out of "listening for the tinkle".  He thinks it's a pretty fun game, LOL!

Last week was the first time EVER that he sat on it bottomless (see sig pic).  For about a week before that, he liked sitting on it fully clothed only.  He would scream if I took his diaper off and asked him if he wanted to sit, though.  Last night he did a little pee in the potty even!  WOO HOO!

Right now, it's working out that he seems to like to do "potty time" right after he eats dinner.  We're having fun with it right now still, though - no pressure!  I'm figuring that since he let me know when he was ready for this much, and he will hopefully do the same as he is ready for more!

Cross fingers for me that it continues to go well, I'm just flubbing my way through it!
