I am going to my first bar mitzvah. I need to know basic protocol, such as are their colors I should avoid and any other tidbits of advice.

Other than not wearing an SS uniform, you're fine. During the service treat it like any other religious service. During the party, have fun. I highly recommend joining in the "Hora" (big circle dance).

If you're thinking monetary gift, increments of 18 are good (18 is the number equivalent of the word "life").

We always give money so the increments of 18 thing is good advice.  So I don't have to worry about exposing my knees or sholders?  I was told hubby will most likly have to wear the liltle hat thing which I can't spell. Yomika? Yamika?  You know what I mean.

How religious is the family? I think you'll be ok with a knee-length skirt. DH will have the option of wearing the yamaulke (kippah). They make good keepsakes though. Usually they're printed with the kid's name and the date on the inside.

Wear a hefty bag and a yamulke. You'll look amazing.

 That is so cool.  The family appears to be moderate.  She wears pants and the son/husband don't wear yamaulke outside of temple that I am aware of.  I love excuses to buy a dress.   I am tre excited.

You'll have a blast. Let me tell you, you'll never dance the way you dance with a group of Jews. We're big on the group dancing. Do NOT miss the Hora!

When is it?

I miss being on the bar/bat mitzvah circuit. It was so much fun. If I was still in CA I'd be going to the kids i used to teach in preschool's events. I'm sad and feeling old.
