This is frustrating

I've decided to switch to a midwife practice at a birthing center. The birthing center is located at a hospital. Yes, it's late in the game but with what I want, I am not sure I'll get through my current OB. So I go to look today to ensure that they are covered. All the OBs the midwives are affiliate with are in-network. The hospital is in-network. Delivering at the birth center is better health-wise because I'm closer to the better NICU and the Children's Hospital, and the hospital is better than the one I'd be delivering at if I stayed close to home.

But the midwives? Not in-network. And according to my insurance, it's because they generally don't work with them. So I'm actually trying to save them money (birth center rates are less money, midwives don't cost as much as an OB, I won't be charging things like drugs), but they don't cover that. And I have to go and get approval from the insurance company. I'm annoyed, this is a hassle.

Re: This is frustrating

  • ironic, don't you think?
  • There is an entire history of the medical profession removing and then preventing midwives from being part of the birthing process.  Stay strong. It's worth it.  I wish I had a midwife.  I swear that both of my births would have gone much better if I had one.
