I was asked to bring an appetizer to Christmas Eve (ok, let me rephrase that...my husband was asked to bring an appetizer, as he is the chef in our house) and he wants to do something different from the usuals. Our usuals include: BLT dip, buffalo chicken dip, pizza dip, guacamole, taco dip, veggie tray, etc.
Travel to Christmas Eve takes about 30-45 minutes, so we need something that can be re-heated or served cold. Our family is pretty simple (no squash, mushrooms, things like that) Any ideas?
TIA!
Re: Appetizer Ideas??
Yea, in my simple southern family squash is a holiday staple. FI's simple family loves mushrooms.
Make this (it's a favorite with everybody I know)
Equal parts room temp cream cheese & sour cream (I use 2 packages of cream cheese and corresponding sour cream, you can do more or less)
6 freshly chopped jalepenos, deseeded
1 medium can chopped black olives
1 - 2 bunches scallions, washed and chopped (include the onion part)
1 small can green chilis (I sometimes omit these) chopped
Mix together, let chill in the fridge. Serve with tortilla chips or corn chips & favorite salsa.
LOL - my brother is a very plain-jane food lover too. He always gets mad and won't eat my "rich people" food as he likes to call it. Some ideas:
Ham Roll-Ups (I love these w/ Carl Budding ham filled and rolled with cream cheese, garlic powder, minced onion, worchersterchire (sp), salt and pepper)
Deviled Eggs
Lil' smokies w/ honey mustard wrapped in crescent rolls
Coconut Shrimp
Cheesy-Chili Dip
Spinach and Artichoke Dip in a Hawaiin Bread Bowl
BBQ Meatballs
Asian Spiced Spare Ribs
I just had a party and made a pumpkin dip that was very good (and is served cold). 1/2 can pumpkin, 1/2 block of cc, nutmeg and cinnamon all blended together. I served it in a hollowed out acorn squash for presentation and served it with ginger snaps and green apples.
Or for a nicer pigs in the blanket, use some flavor of chicken sausage. Make sure the sausages are either pre-cooked (or cook them yourself). Then wrap in crescent dough and bake. I use apple gouda chicken sausages and they are really tasty! They'd be easy to reheat too.
-baked brie with crackers
-mexican layer dip (refried beans. sour cream, salsa, cheese layered in that order served with chips)
-coconut chicken bites with sweet and sour sauce
