New adult house parties vs. sloppy aprtmt parties

When my husband and I move into our new home in January we certainly want to enjoy the company of friends. We have had some rockin' parties at our apartment and DO NOT want those types of parties at the new home. Many of our friends are expecting babies or have already had children (we are not looking for a childs party). We want to host get togethers with them and have it be more classy and yet still FUN.

We went shopping last night and noticed there are many adult (not ronchy) board and other kinds of games for adults.

Can anyone recommend fun games for adults or fun entertaining ideas?

Thanks so much!

  • (1) it's raunchy, not ronchy.

    (2) If it's the same friends, this is going to be a difficult move. Try games like Apples to Apples, Scattergories, Battle of the Sexes, Scrabble, Cranium (Wow), Trivial Pursuit...

  • sorry for the spelling mistake.

They are the same friends, but many of us have grown up since the last time we allowed apartment parties, thank goodness. So, those game ideas are just what I asked for.

Many of us have been waiting for someone to begin get-togethers again. I am one of two friends to own a home, so the pressure (in a good way) is on to host some lovely, yet entertaining parties.

Keep the game/entertaining ideas coming  :-)

    Thank you!

  • Do you have the ability to set up cornhole or horse shoes in the back yard? That's not so great for this time of year, but in the summer it would be fun.

    What about poker?

  • I don't think that you really need games to make it a good party.  Just music, wine/beer, and the right mix of people.
  • My friends like taboo, scattergories, pictionary, balderdash, partini and cranium for board games.

Like Butter Cookie mentioned, cornhole is also a huge hit in the summer.

  • Another fun one is mafia.
  • Those games are great ideas! Thank you.

The beer/wine, music, friends is kinda what we had before and those are not always preggo friend friendly (I know 12 pregnant ladies! crazy huh!?)...so we are hoping to branch out from the booze centered ideas and work towards games...

    Thanks for the ideas!

  • And on the more expensive side of things, Rock Band is a big crowd favorite (esp after a few drinks).
  • This usually evolves naturally as well, so I would try not to stress about it too much.  When you move up from a bag of chips open on the living room table to multiple make ahead appetizers on serving pieces, people get the hint and act accordingly.
  • Thanks Jim&Jaime. We have been dying to have a great space to host social events (i.e. a new home) since our apartment is terrible (not a great neighborhood, small, etc).

I think your "bag of chips" comment was hysterical!

    Thanks you.

Sorry, I probably could have elaborated more.  I wasn't meaning thug rap and a keg.  I meant more acoustic and nice wine and conversation being the main component.  Ditto the hors d'oeuvres comment.  We've never had games at our parties and have just done the food/wine/music combination and things are always fairly tame.  I think that, when your friends are at the same life stage as you (house, kids, married, etc), things tend to sort themselves out on their own.

  • Kimnelson09, thank you for your advice. I think you are 100% correct, we are all at the same stage of life and will all act accordingly.

     :-)

  • We also play catch phrase a lot.

  • Taboo is usually a good one.

Or charades... no game needs to be bought, just have folks write movie titles or phrases on little pieces of paper and throw them in a bowl.

  • Apples to Apples is really fun! I also like the themed Scene it games if you have friends that are fond of tv/movies.

I also love to have euchre tournaments or texas hold em parties

CATCH PHRASE!!!!! so much fun with small groups:)

  • Apples to Apples is my favorite - the larger the group playing the more fun, and since it's not a traditional board game, it doesn't have to be a 2 hour commitment to play.

  • I love charades with a big group  of people. I have found one way to have a little more control is to put on the invite that alcohol will be served and then just provide one signature drink. We did this for our Christmas party this year, we just made a mix drink of vodka/sprite/splash of cranberry. When that ran out is about 1am and everyone started heading home.

For us we still have a couple bachelor crazy friends that make it their mission to get everyone hammered. Unfortunately we just don't invite them very much. Our rule is that if we are having a party and everyones gonna be outside we invite them, but for something inside in the winter, its a little much to handle and we don't invite them. Luckily they are cool and understand, they have never gotten upset.

  • It sounds like your friends aren't the partying type anymore. Especially, if you know 12 women who are pregnant. Well, I hope they aren't paryting like they are in college. You can start by inviting just a few couples at a time and set the mood with a "game night" or dinner party. Once everyone sees it is just dinner, games and good conversation, the need for craziness may subside.

I agree, Apples to Apples is a great game. My friends and I also like Things (from Target). It can get inappropiate, but boys will always be boys. Pictionary is funny and entertaining as well.

  • I love all of your ideas! Seeing the excitement when talking about which ones you love makes me thrilled to try them. Thank you so much and I'll have to give them a try and post my success :-)

    Thanks again!

  • Wine/cheese party (though not good now for the pregnant friends), game night, fondue party.  I recently bought 80s Scene It so I am going to plan an 80s theme party.

  • I third "Catch Phrase".  It usually ends up that everyone forgets what team they are on and just want to scream out the answer. But definitely fun. We've also been to a few parties where we played wii and wii fit and those are always a good time.
  • apples to apples is a blast...every1 new i play with is skeptical at first but soon convert.  Also, I have been loving catch phrase and taboo.

  • Get a Jenga set & write rules, commands or dares on the bottom of the pieces. When you play, you have to do the thing that's written on the piece you pulled. This is really fun, all of our friends love it & have gotten themselves Jenga sets since playing it at our place.

Try things like; Be The DJ, Tell Your Most Embarrassing Story, Pull Your Next Piece Standing On One Leg, Take A Sip Of Your Drink For Every Year You've Known The Host, etc.

  • It's been my experience that the change is just organic.  I still hang with the same people who I used to party with in my single years.  Now, we are married, many have children and are just older.  Our parties are way more tame, no one really gets drunk, many don't drink at all and we still manage to have a nice time.

I recently played Apples to Apples with some people and it was alot of fun.
