Butcher Shops in Beaverton/Hillsboro?
We're looking for a good one to supply us with meats and organ meats for Nandi since she's transitioning so well onto raw.
Does anyone have any favorites? Any that we should avoid? We don't mind driving for this, since it will be a huge stockpile we do every month or few months.
Re: Butcher Shops in Beaverton/Hillsboro?
When we were feeding raw we used Darwin's Pet. They are based in Seattle and ship packages of raw food to your home on dry ice. It's very reasonably priced, and much more convenient than doing all the chopping yourself!

Back when we were considering raw pancreas for Leo's condition, we looked into Whole Foods, bc I hear organ meats can be dangerous if not extremely 'clean'. Believe it or not, its very cheap! You just have to ask for the meat manager, tell him its for your dog, and they will order it for you. And its all human grade too. Alas, that why we couldn't get a steady supply of pancreas-if they cant sell it to humans they wont sell it to dogs . Thats kind of cool though on their part though-you know your dog wont get any 'garbage meat'.
Anyway, the manager said he had lots of dog clients!

Jeni that site looks awesome! Unfortunately, that's what we're trying to go away from. We've been using ground premixed for the past few years with our cats, but we really want to do not-ground stuff that we put together ourselves.
I've tried e-mailing Whole Foods, but they never got back to me. I didn't realize that until now. New Seasons can order things for us, but they're so expensive. I guess we'll have to talk to Whole Foods in person.
And thanks SD! I was googling to see if Phil's had a website. I didn't find one, but I did find this website that's going to help a bunch, I think!
Thanks for the recs!
I went to Whole Foods in person today and the guy I talked to was such a jerk! He's like "Well, not to be rude or anything but I specialize in people food." I don't know about y'all, but when people start off with "No offense" or "Not to be rude" I tend to think that they already know they're going to be rude to me and are just trying to make it seem otherwise.
I said, "Oh, I know you specialize in people food. We prefer to know what's going into our pet foods and have been feeding them raw. I certainly prefer that they eat human grade meat!"
And he looked at me like I was a crazy biatch and said that he couldn't order anything for me.
I said "Really? Because we were able to order organ meats and chicken necks and backs when we were in Boston from Whole Foods." He was like "Are you sure?" "Yep, my husband was the one who looked into it, and the only place we shopped at in Boston was Whole Foods."
So he mumbled and rolled his eyes and asked what I wanted to have ordered. I told repeated what I'd just said. And then he said "Well you know that they're going to come in HUGE cases. You'll have to buy the entire thing and it's a LOT. We don't do pet food here, just people food. You probably won't have room for the whole case."
Really dude? The point of feeding our pets raw is so we know what they're eating, because it's better for them, and because it can be done for a lot cheaper than most pet foods especially when you buy in bulk. So the freezer that I went out and bought that's dedicated to pet food? Yeah, there's plenty of room in there to fill up with meat for my pets that I will buying from another business.
Yeesh. And I was so sugary sweet and nice to him the whole time even though I wanted to slip into my former Boston snarky biatch self.

We've been shopping at Whole Foods for almost 5 years and have never had an issue before. I lurve their cheese department people, especially.
Supporting local is great, and we do try to do it whenever possible. But I'd prefer to support Whole Foods over Safeway or Albertson's due to WF's stance on ethical treatment of animals. And I'd prefer to support New Seasons over any of those. It's hard being humane and ethical sometimes. :-p
