Vent

It's snowing here. Just like it has the last two Christmases, and countless other, normal days.

Here in CO, we don't so much rely on the plows coming through. A lot of snow melts as soon as the sun comes out; a lot of roads stay clear just from people driving on them. It is rare that the roads are impassable, even for me in my tiny Corolla with no special snow equipment.

BFFs are supposed to come up for Christmas. My BFF texted this morning that "Christmas is iffy."

Of course it is. They refuse to drive in the snow. At all, it seems. Last Easter they were supposed to come up, too - we had maybe two inches of the white stuff, and they canceled. She claimed it was because they had a foot down by them, but again - it's Colorado. That is not a lot of snow. And it ignores the previous two Christmases, where we all set out in the Corolla through two+ feet of snow, and still coming down, to go see them. Without incident, I might add.

I'm just irritated. Maybe it's petty, I don't know. I drive in this stuff all the time - my first real snow-driving experience was the first Christmas we were here, and H cleared 3 feet off the car and the driveway before we left, and it was all back, plus more, when we got home. Their car is not unreliable. I'm just dying to know how he gets to work when it's like this. My H doesn't call in, even though he has the option to work from home. The freeways are clear, and the trip to our house is almost all freeway. The worst they'll find is on our actual street - and besides, it's supposed to be sunny on Friday, anyway.

I'm just complainy, I guess. Feel free to ignore me.

Re: Vent

  • I would be pissed too.  What kind of conditions does it have to be for them to actually come?  I would ask that.  Just cause I'm a ***.
    image
  • eh, it's understandable to be annoyed. i am a person who cancels for lots of small reasons, so maybe that's just how they are.

OTOH, not many people like to even risk driving in disagreeable weather if it's not important (like, for work).

can you confront her/call her out about this? it doesn't have to be angry; i'm just curious.

  • I hate one-sided relationships.

    image
  • You should do a "Christmas in July" to see what happens.
    image
  • I wouldn't bother with a confrontation. It's just who they are. They're very much more conservative people than we are, in every way, and their being married just reinforces it. Most of the time it's nothing, it's just "different strokes", but this really irks me for some reason.

If they don't want to come up, I'm happy to go down there, but I don't know if they'll take that as an alternative (because if it's too dangerous for them, it's obviously too dangerous for us.).

If they bail, we'll just go do ZooLights or something. And I won't have to cook a big fancy dinner, either. Gotta look at the bright side.

  • I would still cook the dinner, take pictures and put "wish you were here" on them.

  • Do you think it'll be safe to drive to the airport tomorrow? It is supposed to snow here, and I'm hoping we won't get grounded. I'll let you know.
    image
  • For us? It'll be fine. That's an all-freeway trip, too, and those are the first things the plows do. Plus all the people on them, even in bad weather, keep at least one or two "lanes" semi-clear. I have to go to church, anyway - I'll be out and about.

From my vantage point, it doesn't look bad enough to close the airport, or even delay flights very long. I am not a pilot/air traffic controller/ whathaveyou, though, so I can't really say. Currently, it's snowing, has been since last night, and there are no road alerts or airport alerts posted on the DIA website.

  • #1 - Good to know that the odds are good for dinner.

#2 - I'm not worried about the weather there. Your people know how to deal with it. I'm worried about the people/weather on *this* end. Snow = ZOMG 'round these here parts.
