gaithersburg, MD...anyone know anything about it?

not that i want to move out of NY to go to MD, but i am just curious about the area. it's an option for me to transfer if i wanted to.

again, not that i want to, but if it is a wonderful place to be it's worth thinking about.

TIA (i'd still rather live in Tampa)

Re: gaithersburg, MD...anyone know anything about it?

  • it's not ballin' like silver spring, but it's doable.  especially with me about an hour away, ready to show up at your doorstep any time i want.  i would be the new momzilla.

  • not ballin' = dealbreaker

the houses are very inexpensive, and that often makes me nervous. you can buy my apartment for what you can buy a 3br/2bath townhouse out there.

i like to weigh my options. DH may not be interested in ever hearing about it. sucks to be him.

  • I'm going to be asking similar quesitons in the future. Yesterday, H and I looked at jop posting for him, and most of them were in BFE. He also told me he is applying for a job in his hometown, where MIL lives. Paint the wall with my brains.

  • i imagine brain color paint to probably be a pretty good choice. what is it, like a grey/beige? that's so in.
  • I practically grew up there. All the DC suburbs run together so you never really know where Rockville ends and Gaithersburg begins. It's a typical suburb, I guess. Pretty soulless, with lots of strip malls and nicely manicured housing developments built in the 80s and 90s.

If you're a die hard city person, you'll hate it. But it's close enough to DC that you could theoretically live in the city and reverse commute, which would take you maybe a half hour to 45 minutes (which is typical commute for the area)

Only a New Yorker (or a San Franciscan) would consider DC area prices inexpensive. The outer suburbs did get hit pretty hard when the housing bubble burst, though. You'll spend a lot more for the same house in Silver Spring or Bethesda.

  • sounds intriguing. it might be nice to one day live in a place where the COL isn't an everyday issue.
  • In all honesty, H and I would jump at the chance to move. But we're both from there, and we both hate where we are now.

The nice thing about Gaithersburg is that even if you don't like it there, there are enough other cities, towns, villiages, and places with a stoplight and a post office within easy driving distance that you'll easily find someplace you love.

I had this problem. I was there in September, and my itinerary said Rockville, my GPS said the address was in Gaithersburg, and when I arrived at the hotel, it said it was in North Rockville. They have a Chipotle there.
  • I grew up on the opposite side of Maryland, so I feel like Gaithersburg is in the middle of nowhere and too far from everything, except DC.  Andrea_Lea is around that area so if I can get her attention here, she might have a more relevant opinion than mine.

  • Sorry I'm late to this thread, I was out with the crazies in Bethesda.

So Gaithersburg... depends where, do you have any idea what part of Gaithersburg? Any kind of landmark or street name would be helpful.

Or you can e-mail me amassunu at gmail.com or find me through ilove on FB to discuss further and/or in detail.

I live in Germantown so am in or through Gaithersburg all.the.time.

DED @ North Potomac.  Potomac is a very uppity and expensive area, "North Potomac" is what Rockville (aka Wanna-Be Potomac) came up with to sound more ritzy.*YAWN*

Some parts of Silver Spring are comparable to Gaithersburg (the good and the bad fwiw) but it's all the 'burbs no matter how you look at it.
