Our less than 3 year old couch is a piece o' sht. I think we paid about $400 for it, with tax. The wood inside one of the arms is broken and there are springs pinching me in the arse. I love how it looks but it's broken and I don't know how much longer it will last. I think the move didn't really help it at all.
Would you buy a couch off Craigslist if it wasn't covered in animal fur and didn't smell like smoke? How much would you pay? I might be able to get a decent one for around $300- I've been trolling CL the last couple weeks.
Or would you wait and save up your monies for the couch you really want that will cost around $800-$1k? I want a very specific style of couch and there's only two out there that I can find in the semi-affordable range.
This is Zsazsa's couch that I want to steal (hmm.. she's OOT right now):

This was on sale for $699 last week, but it has three cushions and that kind of drives me nuts because we have 3 cushions now and they always need adjusting:

I might go check out the Macy's Furniture Outlet & the C&B outlet too. If I'm going to pay over $300, I want to get the sofa I really want. Plus, I might have a new job starting soon because I've already made it through 2 interviews and there's a 3rd one probably coming up very soon...

OK. this made me laugh, and it is wrong to laugh. it reminded me of Tiny Tim.
We only bought new couches with wedding money. I would almost always buy used - it's not a mattress. You're wearing clothes on a couch, and the worst most people leave are foodstains on it. There's always reupholstering, too.
We bought two used couches at the ARC thrift store, just because they were the perfect shape. We've been sitting on them with no outbreaks of plague for over a year now.
