Bakersfield

Hey ladies,

First, I am hoping I have the right board, but I think that Bakersfield is considered central CA, rght?  Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll go to the right place!

Anyway, clearly, I am not from Cali, but my H has recieved a great job offer from a flight school in Bakersfield, and we are weighing our options and the knot/nest has always been helpful to me in the past.

So does anyone have any thoughts or opinions about Bakersfield?  Where are the good areas?  Bad areas?

I have read some stuff on-line, and most of it is not so glowing...most people have noted that bakersfield is dirty, crime ridden, and very conservative.  Is this true?

TIA for the help!

Re: Bakersfield

  • We just moved close to Bakersfield.  I am starting an Internship in Bakersfield in August.  I only know where the good shopping is! Sorry I can't be more help, but I am anxious to read the responses you get.
  • Hi!  Welcome to Cali!  Yes, Bakersfield is in Central Cali.  I am from a town 70 miles north of Bako.  B is a nice town with lots to offer everyone.  It is within traveling distance of the mountains, beach, and LA (a benefit of living in Cen Cal).  Although it has some "bad" areas, I have heard that the Northwest side is the up and coming area.  Stay away from the east side, east of the 99 freeway.  There are many popular restaurants and shops on the NW side.  Where are you coming from?  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the replies!  We are coming out to Bako in a few weeks to check the town out and for DH to check out the place he would be working at.

I have been looking at real estate costs around the NW and UC Bakersfield, and it seems like there is a lot of valuable property in that area, so I kind of figured that would be a good place to start.

I'm coming from Salt Lake City UT so it will be a good change...no more snow!!!

  • I've lived in Bakersfield for 2 1/2 years.  My DH also got a new job here, and we really like it.  We really like that it is a very residential/family oriented city.  We live in the SW (South of Stockdale/West of 99), and it's pretty nice.  Like all of CA there are a lot of great deals on houses at this time which are more reasonable than most of CA.  We've loved traveling around the west coast.  I actually travel a lot for work and fly out of the
Bakersfield airport.  It super nice and not to much more cost than driving down to LA.
