But honestly, your friend shouldn't feel bad taking it back if it's not your friend's style. MIL would feel worse about her money going to waste on a bag that your friend wouldn't use. And there are SO MANY cute bags out right now. I hope your friend is charitable and invites some other friends with her if/when she goes to exchange it.
