First Post/Car Questions from a snow novice

Hi Everyone,

I don't post too often on the boards, and this is my first post on the local board ever, so hello.

My husband and I recently moved from Florida to Kansas for grad. school, and we have absolutely NO experience with snow.  With all of the snow we've had in the last couple days, I'm wondering if this is "normal" or average for a Kansas winter or out of the ordinary?

Also, we have one car and it is a '98 Honda Civic 2WD.  We can handle main roads when they're plowed, but we live at the top of a gradual hill and can't make it up the hill when it hasn't been plowed.  Should we potentially look for a 4WD car? Or would snow chains be safer on our 2WD?

We have "All-weather" tires on the car at the moment.  I guess I am just looking for any and all advice as a person dealing with snow for the first time.

All comments are appreciated. Thank you!

Amy

  • This is not normal! We haven't had a snow like this in years. That being said, being the the midwest you can count on some snow and usually ice every year.

I am not a car expert, but can tell you I have always had 2WD cars, and my recent car is AWD and I get around fine in the winter. This recent weather has just been extra crazy.

Welcome to the snow and the midwest!

  • I agree I wouldn't consider this snow normal.  We do normally get some snow and some ice.  my DH and I have a 2WD car and a 4WD SUV.  Growing up in Kansas/Missouri we always have had at least one vehicle that is 4WD.  I think it's a personal choice really.  If you have a job or if your DH's school is really strict on weather related leave  I would consider trading for at least one vehicle with 4WD. It is definately not a requirement though.

  • Thank you all so much. It is comforting to know that this isn't normal winter weather.

We'll probably in to a 4WD car in the near future just for peace of mind.  The 2WD we have now is actually the same one I've had since High School, so it's about time for another (newer) car anyway.  Although, I still love my car and it runs great!  Of course DH is the one who gets stuck doing the maintenance on it.

     Thanks for the warm welcomes

  • Welcome to the area, and be assured this is not normal! As the other girls noted, we do usually get some snow & ice here, but not usually this much at once.

Strangely enough, I've also got a '98 Civic 2WD (mine has 186,000 miles on it and I don't want to trade it in either!) and it seems to do okay on plowed roads and with low levels of snow pack. DH's car is also 2WD but a little higher off the ground & a V6, so it can power through the snow a little better. In typical winters, we get along just fine, but we've both lived in northern states and are used to driving in snow. If we didn't have that comfort level, a 4WD would probably bring some peace of mind.
