Greenville, Simpsonville, Mauldin?

We are going to be moving from NJ to SC. We are looking in greenville but I am not sure what the nicer areas are. I see alot of Simpsonville and Mauldin when I am looking. My areas of consideration are mainly good schools, and nice area. I see alot of nicer homes but not sure if its in a good area. Any info on these area would be really helpful. TIA

NBJENNY gave me alot of useful info but am hoping to get alittle more.

Re: Greenville, Simpsonville, Mauldin?

  • DH and I live in Simpsonville, in the 5 Forks/Woodruff Road area. This area is wonderful. Around Woodruff Road it can be rather busy, but when you get into Simpsonville "proper" it's more of that small town feeling. We've been here for just under 3 years and absolutely love it here. My friend Stephanie was our realtor-her web site is seestephsell.com.  We don't have children yet, so I can't give you any real specifics on that aspect, but our neighbors with children that attend the public schools in our area are fairly positive about the school and its staff (the elementary school is Bells Crossing). I hope this information helps some. Good luck on your move/home search!!!
  • We too live in the Bells Crossing school district in 5 Forks which is technically in Simpsonville.

If you're concerned about schools, when we moved here we were told that in general the public schools are better in Simpsonville than Greenville.

The nice thing about 5 Forks (which is technically in Simpsonville) is that it's really close to a lot of the conveniences of Greenville like the shops on Woodruff Road, and even in rushhour, it only takes my DH 30 minutes to get to his office in the heart of downtown Greenville.

I don't know a ton about BAD areas, but I do know that you most likely want to avoid anything near Berea (an area of town) or White Horse Road.

  • You typically can't go wrong with Simpsonville or Mauldin.  There is a reason why it is the most popular place to live for people our age.  My husband and I live in Duncan, which is halfway between Greenville and Spartanburg, and we have every intention of moving to Simpsonville or Mauldin this summer.

Even when I moved here as a kid, Simpsonville or Mauldin was suggested, my mom just liked living near the mountains more.  If you pick Greenville, I'd suggest homes on the Eastside or even Greer, but make sure it is Greer near Riverside High School, not Greer High School.

  • We moved to Simpsonville in July from Atlanta.  I like being outside of the city/woodruff road area but like 15 miles from downtown.  We are south off Harrison Bridge/Fairview area and are districted for Fork Shoals Elem, Woodmont Middle and High.  I have been volunteering at Fork Shoals since August and am really impressed with it so far....it is like a diamond in the rough. I taught for 9 years before moving so schools were very important to me.  It is in a very rural area....think farms/pastures...which I am fine about!

I have heard mixed reviews about Woodmont Middle/High and if we still live here by that time, then I will research it then.  There are several good private schools around if we choose to go that route too.

Mauldin seems very industrial to me.  DH works off of Laurens Road/Milllenium parkway close to 85.  When he comes home from work, to get to 385, you have to pass a lot of factories and train tracks in Mauldin.  There isn't anything negative about this, it just seems more industrial.

I have everything I need here off of Harrison Bridge for daily living.  Target, Walmart, Publix, Bi-lo, Ingles for grocery stores and Bloom isn't too far away.  We also have a Home Depot, Lowes, Kohls, Belk, Dollar Tree, Ross, TJ Maxx, Pier 1 and a bunch of restaurants.

The only thing I have to go "in town" for are crafty things (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc) and more specific items that I would find at Babies R Us or some place like that.

We love downtown Greenville and go at least twice a month to eat/play/shop.  My son knows where the toy store is and requests to go there often and loves all the fountains/reedy river park/falls.

We looked at Taylors on the north side of town but found the roads very windy/curvy/more mountainous plus it was way farther from DH's work.  I like being right off the interstate/385....easy traveling in town.

  • I don't know much about Mauldin or Simpsonville, but we live on Greenville's Eastside and love it.  We're close to downtown, the mall, Woodruff Road, and pretty much anywhere we'd want to go.  The schools around here are great- we've got Brushy Creek and Mitchell Road Elem., Northwood Middle, and Eastside and Riverside High schools nearby.  The homes around here are nice.  We live in a neighborhood where all the houses are brick and you have a nice big yard.  The Augusta Road/North Main area of Greenville is also really nice, but more expensive and you won't get as much house for your money.

Definitely avoid Berea, White Horse Road, anything near Highway 25, and anything that says "West Side."
