Does anyone do birthday cakes from home?

I am not happy with most of the bakeries around and am looking for something fun and cute for Sara's 3rd birthday, without spending $75 on a cake.  Does anyone do it from home?  TIA!

Re: Does anyone do birthday cakes from home?

  • I will admit to spending ridiculous money on cake. I'm a loser.

That said, I've also gotten very nice cakes for showers and things from BJ's! Simple, inexpensive and tasty. Maybe try that?

If I made them at home...they wouldn't make it to the party. Let's just say that. Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

  • I tried to do Jakob's second birthday cake myself (from a store-bought cake mix TYVM), and it tasted great, but the decorating was a disaster!  We ended up going with a last minute backup cake from Hannaford that was really cheap and delicious!

For the first birthday or a baptism, I do think that the extra expense for a fancy bakery cake is worthwhile, but beyond that we'll be staying simple and cheap for birthday cakes, I think.  Next year, I'm going to attempt to make Jakob's cake myself again but I think I will skip the fruit filling and the DIY picture topper - keeping it very simple!

  • We've always done cakes from Market Basket or Hannaford which are just as delicious as others.  I also bought my wedding cake from Wal-Mart (I know, I waited til the last min and they were the only place that would do it) BUT it only cost 135.00 and was delicious and beautiful!! AND, that was for a cake for 50-100 people.  Plus I had them decorate it simply and added my own  fake flowers to make it look extra expensive...which by the way worked like a charm!! image

As for making your own cake, I used to do that a lot for friends...just buy a mix, frosting and a disposable cake pan...then you can add some of the birthday decorations they have in the cake aisle.

    Good Luck!!
