Do you do anything to welcome new neighbors?

Some new neighbors moved in over the Christmas holiday and my mother mentioned that I should make something to bring over there.  Do people do this?  If so - what should I make?  They are neighbors that we are interested in getting to know - so it doesn't seem like a half-bad idea.  But it does seem a little awkward.  Did anyone do this for you when you moved into your home - or have you done this for new neighbors before?

Re: Do you do anything to welcome new neighbors?

  • No one welcomed us. :(  I think it would be lovely to bring something over there.  Maybe a little tin of cookies or a bottle of wine or a small potted plant/cactus?  Maybe an invitation for a playdate?

  • I've never had anyone do this but I think it would be very nice of you.

  • When we moved in one of our neighbors gave us a small plant.  Its the holidays, so you could definitely do a tin of cookies or something.

  • Our neighbors made us a lemon pound cake and left it at our doorstep while we were out with a little card welcoming us.  It was really nice and we really appreciated it, so I think it's a great idea.
  • When I moved into my house several months ago, one of the neighbors made me cake balls and left them at my door with a nice note.  I've still never met them in person!

The nice neighbors across the street let me use their phone when I locked myself out of my house two days after I moved in.  Embarrassed  I appreciated that.

  • I've made things when people moved in.If the kids are old enough to eat cookies, I'll make cookies. If they don't have kids or have an infant/toddler I'll make a cake or something. Brownies are also usually a hit.

  • I say do it! Especially if you are interested in getting to know them. We are the only new neighbors in our cul de sac, but no one welcomed us. Honestly, I was a little sad. When we lived in an apartment though, our little building was very friendly. I always introduced myself and sometimes gifted new neighbors. Everyone stopped by and said Hi when we moved in there.
  • When we moved in, our next door neighbor brought us a bag of coffee and coffee mugs from Starbucks.  The mugs said 'The Journey begins today".  It was pretty appropriate.  and we are now really good friends with them!
  • Our neighbors brought us homemade brownies when we were moving in.

The best move-in gesture ever was when I was a kid and we were moving into a new house, the neighbors brought over a pot of fresh coffee in their good sterling coffee service, along with a plate of homemade cookies on their sterling serving tray.  Even as a kid I realized that was amazing.  My parents were really good friends with them for a long time.
