Help! My cat is destroying our new couch

We recently bought a new couch that is microfiber. My cat loves to scratch it! We have bought her new scratching posts and boxes but she continues to scratch (she did it with our last couch too)

With out last couch, I tried sticky paws which left a nasty residue after it came off.

Do you know of any other item that may work? Any spray that is suitable for microfiber?

We tried capping her nails but that was more trouble than it was worth!

The last time I posted on Pets no one responded so I'll try here too!

Re: Help! My cat is destroying our new couch

  • i have used soft paws and gotten them put on at the vet. They worked amazing, other then that I would put a scratching post somewhere near the couch so that she will use that instead. I would also spray my cat with water if i saw her doing it. Sometimes she made it a game tho and would do it intentionally, just to see me chase her around the house with a water bottle!

  • Try taping aluminum foil to her favorite spot...after a few scratches at that, she should stop.  If it's all over and not just a couple of spots, then the claw covers will probably work best.

  • Out of curiosity, Cat Owners, is this a microfiber thing?  One of my old roommates had a cat who LOVED scratching at my microfiber couch.  Your post and Foto's response about making it a game of chase really brought me back to those days.... I never was able to get him to stop.
  • Our old couch was not microfiber...and she destroyed that. We had sticky paws all over it.

Because this is a new couch I am more fussy about her destroying it....I kind of gave up with the old one. She does seems to be doing it more to the microfiber than the old material though,

I am going to try the aluminum foil (DH is skeptical)....she could care less about water....we used to do that with the old couch and she would run away and come back....::sigh::

  • I've heard of people sprinkling catnip on the scratching posts and that seems to attract them there rather than the couch.... you could give it a try but no guarantees.
