Cleaning Routine

So when I first got married I had one down packed.  Laundry was done on Wed and Sat and Sundays was cleaning day.  But somehow or another I got off track.

Does anyone have a cleaning routine that works for them?  I looked at the Cleaning Lady routine from the Cleaning and Organizing board but it was too OCD for me IMO.  TIA

Re: Cleaning Routine

  • I tried to make Wednesday my official cleaning day (until the new season of Lost starts...lol) but I got off track too...

I'm thinking of doing a little each day and clear up the weekend fro having to clean. Maybe I'll do the 20 min timer idea.

    I'm open to suggestions too.

  • Have you looked at the flylady routine?  http://flylady.com/
  • Yeah Jackie that's what I was talking about.  I forgot the exact name but I meant flylady.  Its kind of confusing to me and the steps just don't seem to get to the point fast enough.

Like I think the first step is shine your sink or something.  And then something else.  I don't know, I just wasn't patient enough to go through the steps.  I'm sure it works for other people though.

I'm looking for a routine that's makes the daily upkeep the least time consuming yet covers everything.

  • Oh okay.  I don't do flylady myself, but I know some women that swear by it.  But most of them are homemakers.  I don't have a jobn right now, but I am looking, and I think that flylady would be great for women that are OCD about their homes, but I'm not!  Smile

I don't have a set day for doing certain chores, but after dinner DH and I will do chores.  One of us will take the kitchen, and the other will do something around the house - bathrooms, trash, clutter patrol.....whatever needs to be done.  Then when the kitchen is done, we quit.  It really does help!

  • I am a neat freak about the house! I do laundry on Saturday and once a month all the towels and all the sheets get washed (also on Saturday). I try to do one thing every day after dinner to clean the house. I vaccum 3 times a week and mop twice a week. Then Saturdays are usually deep cleans - i.e. bathrooms, re-organize the closet, re-organize the drawers, deep clean the kitchen.

The kitchen pretty much gets clean every day after dinner. I can't stand a cluttered dirty kitchen. Drives me UP THE WALL!

Your best bet would be to do one thing every single day in the evening. Just pick one chore - de-clutter, vaccum, mop, dust, clean the bathroom, etc. This helps bring everything down so you don't spend one entire day cleaning.

I would keep doing laundry one day a week - that's a great idea in my opinion because it keeps water costs down!

    Does that help at all?

  • I clean when it smells lol does that help?  Wink

Yes it does.  Wow Jenny you vaccum three times a week?  You're so totally R's daughter!  Yeah I'd probably lose ten pounds if I did that.  Its such a pain in the ass to have to take the vaccum upstairs.  Right now we only vaccuum once a week if its a good week.

D dirtys clothes too quickly to only do laundry once a week.  He changes so often I can't keep up.  When I try to keep it to just once a week he complains that his stuff isn't available.  Which is redic because you know how many clothes he has!

I hate waking up to a messy kitchen but sometimes Im so tired that I just cant imagine staying up for another 30 minutes to clean it.

Cleaning is so overrated.  My most hated chore is cleaning the bathrooms.  And it doesn't help that I have 2.5 of them!  Ugh having to go up and down with the cleaning supplies is such a pain.  I can't wait to live in a one story house again!

Sorry for going on a rant.  Vent over.  Thanks!  I think I'm going to go with one major chore a day like vaccuming, dusting, decluttering, deep cleaning of kitchen, and then leave the heavy stuff like bathroom cleaning for Sundays.  Let's see how that works.

  • Oh yeah Jenny thanks for the weekly menu idea.  I'm gonna see how it works for me starting next week.  Should make my life easier and end the daily "What do you want for dinner" question.
  • Yea! I'm glad I could help. Tonight is Stuffed Shells. :) lol. It helps me a ton and helps me stay on budget for groceries becuase I buy the stuff I need in one trip and am done!

J wants to move into a two story house and my argument is also hauling the vaccum up an down the stairs. UGH. I like one story houses - but we're not even in the market right now so it doesn't even matter! Damn buying a house during the bubble! :(

  • I hate living in 2 story!  Little things like being softly tucked into bed and about to drift off into sleep and then forgetting something you need downstairs is really annoying.

I guess its harder for me to be used to it because I didn't grow up in a two story house.  I know people that love it.  They think its more "homey".

  • I don't really have a particular routine. I just keep an eye out on the laundry basket and do a load of laundry when I notice the basket is getting full. Other than that I just clean when I get what I call the "cleaning bug" which happens sporatically. Smile

  • We just bought a two-story house.  I've never lived in one in my whole life.  I'm planning to keep one vacuum upstairs and one downstairs, plus a whole set of cleaning supplies in each place.  Luckily, there is a huge closet upstairs that is perfect for that stuff.  But, I'm sure I will get annoyed when I forgot something downstairs or vice versa...but I will have a nice toned butt in no time! Heheh!

I totally think that's what it is - we both grew up in one story homes! J grew up in a THREE story house so imagine forgetting something ALL the way downstairs. Blah.

  • I agree with some of the other ladies - I try to do a little something each day.  I used to leave all cleaning for one of my day's off but that seemed too much plus things seemed to get messier in between.  Now I will throw a load of laundry in when I get home and then do one room - the kitchen, both bathrooms, bedroom, living room or office.  For some reason I like that better than one chore - I fell more accomplished with one room done.  I spend maybe 30 minutes or so and that's it.  I am lucky that my husband does all of the vacuuming though, I hate it!!

  • To me I hate having to do everything at once.   It makes me want to put it off so instead I do one or two things each night.   That way it takes me about 20 minutes each day instead of a couple hours on one day.   In my mind it makes it better ;)

I usually vacuum on Mon and Thurs, steam clean tile on Friday, laundry on Tues and Sun, Bathrooms on Mon and Thurs,  Dusting and de-cluttering on Wednesday.   DH and I clean up the kitchen together everyday after dinner.   With both of us it's quick and painless.      Once a month or so I will take a Sunday morning and do a DEEP clean (dusting floor mouldings, cleaning our fridge and freezer, moving furniture to vaccum, scrubbing grout as needed, etc).   When I do that it usually takes me about an hour and a half to two hours
