Wicked - a review by Septbride'08 **no spoilers**

AWESOME!!! THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!

Please note that if I could have blown these words up and made them sparkle and shine, sing and dance....I would have.

Additional note, I am a musical, theater fan. I've seen tons and tons of shows, now the words and lyrics to most shows in the last 50 years and this one was just out of this world amazing. I think it helps that I did not know this show and refused to listen ahead of time. I knew a general idea what it was about but didn't know the ending which was thrilling.

If you EVER have the chance to see this show....please do. It is well worth the money.

I never really liked Wizard of Oz....but I know I will never see it the same way again.

  • Glad you loved it!  It's such a great show.

In Rochester, Wicked came through two years ago and I first saw it then, and then last season the Wizard of Oz, (which I've never really loved either) came through, and it was so "meh" compared to Wicked!  Wicked is coming back to Rochester in the spring and I already have my tix and can't wait!

  • So glad you liked it.  Did your mom and J like it too?

I can't wait to see it again.

  • I agree with you!  I didn't know the story line either and I think that's what made it that much better.  I love how everything about the Wizard of Oz had a reason, from the witches hat to how every character got their start.  It was all in the story.  I was blown away by the show.

    So glad you enjoyed it!

  • I havent seen it yet, but we have tickets to go in a few weeks when it comes here to Syracuse and I am soooo excited - I also know all of the music though!

But you should read the books... Ive read all of them and from what I have heard about the show, the books give far more detail, and the ending is different....

I tried to read Wicked years ago when it became the "thing to read, see, hear" but the beginning was soooooo dull I could barely get through or understand it because it was pretty confusing. Did you like the book Wicked?

  • I have to disagree that Wicked is the Best show ever- it's a GREAT show, don't get me wrong, but there are definitely areas of improvement for this one. (I used to act in and direct musical theater, so I'm a bit more harsh than others maybe:) Disclaimer, I DID see it on Broadway and not touring version that came to Proctors, and agree that it IS worth the money to see.

Costuming: A; fantastic, not problems here

Staging: A-; Excellent special effects, lighting and sets; and the dance numbers were well done, although some of the blocking seemed to not properly use the stage as it was set, and the flow seemed forced rather than organic at times.

Book: B; Love the story (of the original book by G. Maguire especially), and minor references in the show to the original Wizard of Oz, but the story didn't properly reflect the original book, and the stage version reduces Elphaba from a true good person, and individual, to a reactor and under-stresses the fact that Glinda isn't so much "good" as just a pretty spoiled brat. I guess if you hadn't read the novel first, you'd enjoy the stage version more.

Score: B-; I won't deny that "Defying Gravity" is one of the most memorable songs written for Broadway in recent years, and that "Popular" gets it's tune stuck in your head, but overall the score could use some help especially the Wizard's numbers- which are the worst in the show (I really think the parts are better than the whole when looking at this score.) And Steven Schwartz typically uses a wider range of styles in his shows to reflect the personality of the characters, and develop them in a way that words alone can't do, and the Wicked score is lacking on that.

I am a HUGE WOZ fan, yet I could not get through the beginning of Wicked. I guess I should try again though.

BTW - the author is from Albany.

  • I also really liked it.  I didn't even know there was a book.  LOL!  I should check that out.

I read the book once and was bit bored... it drags in some parts, but then I listeded to the audio book, and got MUCH more into the stroy, so then I read it for the second time before I began the two sequel books.

BTW - G. Maguires other books not in the wicked series are also fun - he does a play on Cinderella and Snow White as well.  (Althought the Snow White one I havent fnished yet)

  • ...but all that being said... I do like the wicked saga, once I got into it.. I think that you have to read the book more than once to understand all the details!
  • I'm going to the performance in Roch this April.  Can't wait!
