Visiting Portland

Hello ladies,

Philly Nestie here planning a week long visit to Portland for a week in June.

I was looking for recs for the city and surrounding areas for things to do.  We will visit Mt. Hood and also might consider a coastal visit so specific town recs would be appreciated.  I have not picked hotels yet because I wanted to see where our itinerary took us in case we wanted to stay somewhere besides Portland.

We love beer and wine so we definitely want to hit up some wineries and breweries.  Brewpub recs in the city would be helpful too.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Visiting Portland

  • June is a fun month to visit. If you go in the beginning of the month, the Rose Festival will be in full swing. For visiting the coast I'd probably recommend Cannon Beach. There are several nice hotels there, the Surfsand resort is highly recommended. We also have stayed in Manzanita at the Inn in Manzanita. It's so cozy. You get a room with a jacuzzi tub and a captain's bed. We loved stopping by at the Nehalem Bay winery.

In and around Dundee there are also lots of wineries such as WillaKenzie, Erath, Ponzi. I'm sure others can give you more tips.

For visiting Mt Hood, I recommend starting early with a trip to the Columbia River Gorge and driving the old Columbia Gorge highway. Stop at a few waterfalls such as Bridal Veil falls, Latourell Falls, Wahkeena falls and of course Multnomah Falls. You can then drive on to Hood River and take the hway up to Mt Hood from there. It'll be a full day but def. worth it. Or you can spread it out into two days and stay in Hood River for instance at the Columbia Gorge hotel or the Skamania Lodge on the Washington side.

In Portland check out a McMenamins franchise for the beer, such as the Kennedy school in NE Portland. Other great beer can be had at the Lucky Lab in the Pearl, Hopworks in SE Portland, or Wdmer brewhouse in N Portland. There is also the New Old Lompoc in NW and the affiliated Hedge House in SE and Five Quadrants in N Portland. The nice thing about the Hedge House is that it's walking distance to Pok Pok, a great Thai eatery, and to Pix patisserie where the desserts are to die for.

  • I second Cannon Beach for the coast, but I'd look into B&B personally.  It's busy season starting about then so I'd book early otherwise you may not get a room.  No specific recs as DH has family that owns a condo there so we just stay there.

If you are thinking of wineries, I love Domaine Serene the best.  Hands down the best vibe of a winery...like you walked into Tuscany.  Others that I like for their wine: Archery Summit, Erath, Duck Pond, De Ponte Cellars.   Willakenzie is OK but last time we were there (picking up a $700+ order) they gave us major attitude and I've turned off ever since.

Now the beer.....oh my gosh, there are SO many good breweries to pick from.  The best beer I think is made by Rogue and they have a tasting room in NW Portland, or their brewery is on the coast in Newport.  Lucky Lab and Widmer are great options.  Mcmenamin's is cool for a unique atmosphere but their beer is just OK.
