Commingled recycling

I am really into environmental stuff, so bear with me..

I am psyched because last week our garbage company picked up our cheesy recycling bins (crate size) and we got a huge garbage can for all recyclables.  Interesting concept to throw paper in with cans, etc.. but a really good week to start it since we have a ton of recyclables from the holidays (boxes etc).  Anyone else have this?

Re: Commingled recycling

  • Oooh, I *wish* we had the big bins!  We have comingled recycling, but it's only the small bins.  We have to take out our overflowing bin each week, and we only take out the trash every other week or so.  I wish we could switch!

When we were in the UK last year, they have three medium-sized dumpsters - one for recycling, one for compostables, and one for actual trash.  I would love to be able to do that here!

    PersonalMilestone
  • We are in an apartment right now, but that's how the complex does it.  We have a Newspaper Only bin and a Comingled bin.  Makes it a lot easier for us....we just have one larger storage bin in our closet for everything recycling.
  • Our recycling is commingled too- and we actually got "tagged" for NOT commingling. However, ours is commingled metal/glass/plastic and separate for paper (and they DON'T take corrugated cardboard which makes me mad.) They said they pay people to separate it and that's why they want it mixed that way.
  • Our recycling is commingled, but we still separate the paper for some reason, guess it's easier for us to do it that way.  I wish my village would consider giving out large bins though.  We set out about 5-6 blue bins every 2 weeks.
  • In California I did :-(  California recycled everything! They even took away styrofoam.  At my house here I can only recycle plastic #1 and #2 and paper.  It makes me so sad :-(

  • We don't have to separate anything.  And as for the big bins - I wish we got any sort of bin.  We have to provide our own "bin" for our recyclables - and mine happens to be a laundry basket.
  • We have bigger bins in Albany than I've ever seen. They're the usual crate sized base, but they're tall, like about as tall as our trash can.

We still have a blue for plastic/glass/metal and a green for paper though. I am bummed that we can only recycle #1 and 2, but there are a lot of papery things you can throw in there- we keep the flyer on our fridge- cause we're recycling dorks too.
