Pet (cat) people - I have a ?

So we adopted a kitten 2 weeks ago and DH noticed the other day a patch of fur was missing on the kitty's ear.  I looked inside the ear and it's really dirty and there's a couple red spots.  Well today I noticed there a few spots of fur missing on the kitty's legs as well.  One one leg, it looks like there's a big scab and the skin is white and flaky and lifting away (with the fur) from the leg.  What the hell is going on?  Anyone have a clue?  We have a vet appointment tomorrow, but when I called and made the appointment yesterday I only told them about the spot on the ear because that's all I saw.  Now it seems to be spreading and I'm wondering if I need to call and see if we can get squeezed in today.

Re: Pet (cat) people - I have a ?

  • The ear patch might be from scratching- do you trim her nails? It sounds like Ringworm to me- an easy fix with some meds- but is HIGHLY contageous. If not- they scrape all the time (especially at ears) if they aren't kept trimmed. As for the leg, etc. watch to see how she's cleaning herself- my younger cat used to obsessively clean herself, and licked entire patches of fur away which left red, oozing bald areas on her legs. She STILL has areas on her legs where the fur just doesn't grow right b/c of cleaning and the way she plays, but oh well- at least they're not open sores anymore. I'd just watch her for the night and try to stop her from licking the affected areas until the doctor can look at it. If you do have to dress the wounds- good luck with that, our little girl wouldn't tolerate a bandage and we just had to keep putting her meds on over and over, and try to stop her from licking. It took about 2 months to clear up, but DID start to look a little better after about 2 weeks.
  • With our kitten she had a case of ear mites and it looked like dirt and just kept getting worse. It was a pretty easy fix but I had to clean all of them out = YUCK!

I hope that you get an easy answer to your concerns.

  • It sounds like they are scratching the fur off.  Ear mites could be a possibility.  The vet will probably give you something for their ears and tell you to trim their nails.  Hopefully that's all it is, I wouldn't worry too much.
  • Sounds like ear mites.
  • Sounds like the missing hair could indicate ringworm.  Dirty ears usually spells earmites in a kitten.

The ear mites are a quick fix, but if you have any other pets in the house, they may have gotten infected with them already too.

Ringworm on the other hand is a bot trickier.  Def avoid touching those areas, and make sure your kids & other pets keep away until you have some medication to treat it.  Kids are very prone to picking it up.

The vet may use a Woods Lamp to check the areas, and if they glow green, its positive for ringworm.  However, even if its not green, it can still be ringworm, so they may want to do a culture - which takes about 10 days.  I hope its just a skin infection, or flea allergy; and something that can be treated quickly and affordable!

  • I have nothing to add, I just hope kitty gets better! I am such a sucker for cats, I would have many more if I could!
  • What did it turn out to be?
  • sounds like ear mites.
