I posted this in the pets section, too, but I noticed that quite a few nesties over here have guinea pigs. Here's what's going on:
I adopted 3 guinea pigs yesterday. The guy said they're about 3 years old - 2 girls and 1 boy (girls in cage together, boy is seperate). I'm slowly getting them used to being in a different home and got to hold both girls today. The first one loved being in my lap and seemed very healthy. The second one loved being in my lap, too, but seemed to have a swollen belly. Could she be pregnant? How can I tell? The guy I adopted them from knew not to put the girls and boy together because he know pregnancy could mean death for the girl and babies. Could she just be fat???
Any ideas?
Re: Guinea Pig question.....
Well guinea pigs can get rather portly, but she might be. Did the person you adopted them from EVER have the boy with the girls? Ever? It doesn't take long!!
Does she have cowlicks or is she smooth-haired. It would be a lot easier to tell if she didn't have crazy hair like my little guy does My guy has a tendency to be pretty fat, but when he was at his largest, it was all in his butt. Even now, you can feel his ribs fairly easily, but he has a fair amount of weight on their butt. Set her in your lap and look at her from above - can you see any swelling from that angle? If so, she probably is.
I'm sure he did have them together. She has cowlicks all over, but her swollen belly is still obvious. I'm still thinking she could be pregnant, but I also just noticed that it looks like she has some sort of growth on her foot - maybe the belly is a tumor? I was putting a little pressure on her belly and it just felt like it was full of water or something. I have no idea. I'm going to email the guy I got her from and see if he noticed anything.
Thanks for your help, Jacki05!
