Natural Childbirth-help

Hey ladies,

Anyone out there gave birth or is giving birth naturally? If so, are you using a midwife or a dula?  I am trying to find an OB that supports our more "alternative" wishes and am having a hard time.  If you could recommend anyone locally that would be great as far as OB, midwife, or any experiences you have/ had.

Thanks!!

Whitney

  • Ooh, we're neighbors! (I live in Volo.)

Anyway, my doc's office is associated with a midwife practice, so I assume they would offer what you're looking for. However, they're located in Elk Grove, Bloomingdale, and Naperville:

  • Thanks! I will definitely check it out!
  • Not a complete help, but might point you in a direction. Total Body Yoga in Mundelein is offering a natural childbirth class (I can't remember when, but within the next few weeks). I'm sure the instructor has great contacts. They have a website and the owner Sylvia is completely sweet and helpful. GL!
  • Hi!  Not pregnant or anything but I just saw the documentary "The Business of Being Born".  Wonderful movie about the options available to women.  It really impacted me and I bet you'd like it!
  • JosFInnMom----that is crazy that you say that......I used to go to TBY until April when my membership ran out.....I just talked to Ellen, the instructor of that class last night! She had great contacts, and I am starting to feel more at ease.  So crazy how small the world is!!  We are going to be taking that class but not until Nov session.  Thanks for the info though!!!
  • I would recommend that you look for a practice that is either run by or uses CNM's.  Not sure what there is near you, but I know that you can usually search CNM with your insurance to see what is available.

Using a midwife or a doula is the best decision you can make, IMO - let me know if you have specific questions or if you find someone and want to know if my mom knows them.  She was a practicing CNM for years, trained half of cook county, and now teaches at DePaul...

  • And just to give my unsolicited opinion, I went med free with my first, but had an epi with my second. The epi made the delivery itself pain free, but I got the shakes, my blood pressure dropped so much that they had to give me MORE meds to get it back up, and I had an ache at the epidural sight for about 9 months pp. And once it wore off, it totally sucked. At least without the epi, the only thing you feel is better (compared to where you were during delivery). If we ever have a third, I'll try to go med free again and I'd love to use some alternative methods (hypnosis, waterbirth, etc).
