Laptop rec

I just recently purchased the remainder of my business from my partner and with that comes a lot of responsibilties.  I am in desperate need of a new laptop that I can take back and forth from home to work.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'll need to run Quickbooks on it, as well as use it for personal use (pictures, light internet use, etc.)  TIA!!

I'm pretty open.  I don't need the best of the best, but I don't want cheap.  Mid range, I guess.  It's been so long since I've even looked at computers I don't even know how much they cost.  I thought I'd ask here first, and then start researching.

  • I have a toshiba satellite that I love. It's fast, and it's not that heavy.
  • First I must always recommend a macbook =)

Second, in my opinion, Lenovo/IBMs are the best non-mac laptops - T, X or W series.

Lastly, I'd go with an HP before a Dell.

There are several other brands out there: Sony, Toshiba, Asus, etc. that are decent.  If brand doesn't matter, than you should focus on price and specs: memory, processor, Hard drive size...

    Happy shopping!

  • Toshiba has always been a good laptop for us.

  • You don't need an expensive computer for quickbooks, photos, and the internet.  Plan to spend 500-700 dollars.

You don't want a netbook, but pretty much anything else will work.  Somewhere between 14 and 16 inches so it's not too heavy.  I like a long battery life, but if it will always be near an outlet (work and home) then don't worry about it.  You'll probably find around 3-4GB of ram, 320-500GB hard-drive.  Get a dual-core processor, avoid "celeron"s.  You (most likely) don't need a warranty.

Costco is one of the best brick and mortar places to buy (90-day return policy), Newegg.com is well-rated for selection and price (but you can't touch it before you buy, which is a no-go for me).  According to the latest consumer reports, I think Toshiba has the best repair history.  However, your mileage may vary.

If you can wait a bit, April and late summer are supposed to be the best time to buy laptops.

    Good luck!
