Drama at the office

We moved offices on the 15th of December. We weren't allowed to talk about or deal with the move until the day of, which of course made the move a complete clusterfck.

Yesterday, 2 of the girls in our office had to rent a U-Haul to go pick up furniture that was donated to us and bring it to our office. They had a little bit of help, but not much, and when they got to our office, guess who had to move all that crap? Yup, us. 5 women, many heavy pieces of furniture.

When we were done moving that stuff, naturally, we had some furniture to trash from our office, so we loaded up the U-Haul with that. Not to mention, the girls had to go back to our old office, load up that crap, and put it all in the dumpster, as instructed by our Director. While they were at the old office and filling the dumpster, the landlord  came out, started harassing them, and took photos of them putting the stuff in the dumpster. He made them take everything out of the dumpster, and the girls had to drop the trash furniture elsewhere.

It is direct violation of our company policy to have employees move furniture. Now our legal department is involved, and I have a feeling our Director will get into trouble. I kind of hope she does. She's been an asshat.

Re: Drama at the office

  • Wow. You work at some crazy places.  At least you get your paycheck each week, right?

  • It's too soon for you to be having office drama. You've only been there a short time. HOLD OFF!!!!

Glad that something is being done, though. Your director sounds like she needs to re-read her employee handbook.

  • having employees move heavy furniture sounds like it would be a huge liability - what happens if someone gets hurt?

I hope legal sorts this out.

  • Question. If you knew it was a direct violation of company policy, why did you do it? I would've had my handbook out, with the policy highlighted and sticky-noted to show the Director, along with a giant Eff You foam finger.
  • For some reason, I think I'm destined to work with crazies.

I work at a national non-profit that has been around for years and years, so I do get paychecks, as well as generous mileage reimbursements.

It is a huge liability, and it's a nightmare. It's like the move that wouldn't end. We were told this morning in our meeting that the legal department is sorting everything out, and it's out of our hands. And that we are NEVER to move anything again. We can move a bookshelf that has been out of place for the last few days, but nothing else.

    THANK GOD.
