DH told he needs to lower this cholesterol.

DH had a physical yesterday and the Corpsman (Navy's term for a medic, but the ones who work in Navy hospitals/clinics can do almost everything a MD can do) told him that he really needs to work on lowering his cholesterol.  He wants him to change his diet and come back in 6 months.  DH gets his cholesterol checked yearly and this has never come up before, but unfortunately both his parents have very high cholesterol so it's not a huge surprise to me.

We're going to work hard to lower his levels so they don't bring up medication at his next check in 6 months.  He hasn't been exercising in the past 6 months and I'm sure as soon as he starts working out again he's going to see a huge improvement because our diets aren't terrible when we eat at home.  It's going out to eat more than we should that's probably what caused this.

So our household now includes a diabetic dog, me with hypothyroidism, and DH with high cholesterol.  I thought these health problems weren't supposed to hit us until we got old! Confused

  • Booo, hope he can get it back in check without needing medicine. Cholesterol is the worst!! Mines been high for the past year and a half now, but bc of my age and HDL, I have not been put on medicine.
  • That suuuuucks!

My DH has/had HIgh blood pressure AND high cholesterol and was on medication until he lost his insurance over a year ago :(

I try to help  him make better food choices, but only he can be responsible for that. I do what I can.

  • I do most of the cooking and am aware of saturated fat/calorie content of what I buy, so I have to think his high cholesterol is due to lack of exercise and genes more than what we eat.

There's not a whole lot I can cut out at home.  We already use skim milk, 99% lean ground turkey breast, boneless/skinless chicken, reduced fat cheese, baked chips, etc.

We do order pizza and eat out a lot though.  That's going to have to change.

Yup, thats pretty much us to a T. It runs in his family hard core.

  • That stinks!  I hope he starts exercising again...that has such a huge, positive impact on cholesterol.

My friend and her brother are an interesting example of cholesterol:  she's overweight, eats pretty well, and exercises on a fairly regular basis.  Her brother is obese, eats terribly, and never exercises.  Who has the bad cholesterol?  My friend!  Her brother has great cholesterol numbers instead.  It drives her nuts.  It's very much related to genes.  I have slightly elevated numbers, but always have (back when I was younger, didn't exercise ever, and ate terribly vs. now when I'm the opposite).  I'm pretty sure it's due to genetics, and am conscious of it.

My numbers were a bit elevated (just the bad kind) at my physical, but apparently untreated hypothyroidism causes this.  I'm going to ask my doc to re-check my cholesterol once my thyroid levels have normalized.  I rarely eat red meat (we're talking less than 5 times a year), but I do enjoy some cheese...
