Anyone use a financial advisor?

DH and I have been debating on using a financial advisor.  We are both business minded ppl and could probably take care of this ourselves if we had all the free time in the world to do research, etc but the fact of the matter is our jobs are very demanding so we don't a ton of time to plan for the future...it should be our priority but everything else seems to get in the way!

I have been in contact with an Ameriprise Financial person and was wondering if anyone has had experience with them?  Or just your general experience using a financial advisor, planner, etc would be helpful.  TIA!

Re: Anyone use a financial advisor?

  • We do. She's independent and not associated with any financial organization.

She helps us evaluate our budgeting, our asset allocations, our investment allocations, our necessary liquidity (for house project, baby, etc.). She was also great pre-wedding in helping us find an Estate Planning attorney (for our trust) and a pre-nup attorney as well.

And she also does our taxes each year.

She's been really great. Let me know if you'd like her info.

  • Great question! I've always wondered about financial advisors. Thanks for posting.

  • We don't yet, but fully plan to once we make more than an amount that puts us just above the poverty line :) ?

Sure, we're both intelligent and will be a lawyer and a professor, but if there's one thing I've learned going to grad school, is that I can't be an expert in everything, but that there is someone out there who is an expert in taxes/saving/planning, keeping how much I can contribute to this fund or that fund straight without going crazy.

  • DH's employer provides one for free.  I'm not sure what you're looking for - a broker (for your respective retirements, investments and misc financial products) or a money manager for your joint household expenses.

  • We have one - even though I am a CPA/MBA and work in the investment industry.  Could I do it? Yes - but it does require more time than I'm willing to give it so I let somebody else manage it for me.  She does our retirement and financial goals analysis and is affiliated with a major bank (UBS), but she's also a good friend so I trust her completely.

I would recommend finding someone you trust and is willing to spend time answering questions, etc.

  • Hmmmmm I'm pretty sure DH's company (hee hee aka my company) has a service that you can use... Probably either free or at a discounted rate.

  • I use Robert W Baird, and DH has one here in CA. We had separate firms when we met and we never combined them since we both like who we use. The office I use is in Atlanta since there is where I was living, but they are awesome. Like others have said, I could do it myself, but I am more willing to pay someone to do it so I can have peace of mind.

I don't have any experience with the firm you are looking at using, but I cannot help you there. Good luck.

Hi, financial advisors are the ones that guide us not only in starting business but also manage our business in all aspects. I started my business with many difficulties and challenges, then on my family suggestion consulted Coface ( http://www.coface.se/)  and I am very satisfied with the results.
