confused...need to make a choice

DH and I recently decided that we'd like to move back up north to PA - a big deal since we just moved down to FL in June, '08 and built a brand new house down here.Things have changed since we've moved down here - we miss the seasons, snow, his family (which I used to have mixed feelings about, but now feel somewhat close to them), "northern" food, the job opportunities are SO much better for DH up there (he's a financial analyst), the list goes on and on. I would like to move asap.

BUT...DH won those plane tickets to Europe - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. While I would totally LOVE to go to Europe, I'm just feeling like we shouldn't right now because I want to save $ to move back up north. I have to decide whether to go on this trip or to sell the tickets to someone at his office (apparently tons of people have offered to buy them) so that we can make/save some money to move back home.

I know this is something to mostly talk to DH about, but just wanted to hear what you girls would do if you were in my situation.

On the flip side...anyone looking for a practically new house in Clermont? lolStick out tongue

 Thanks for listening/reading.

Re: confused...need to make a choice

  • Since I feel like I would never get a trip like this (maybe when the kids are grown up and we are retired...lol) I would go on the trip..... you can always move up north later, unless you are seriously itching to get out of FL ( I can understand that as I feel like that often myself).
  • That's what I was thinking, too, Jen - that a chance like this probably wouldn't come for a long time (if ever).

Itching?? It's hard not to start packing up my house now and I have been checking realtor.com everyday...lol

lol... all of our immediate families are here in FL now or we would be probably be gone. : )

It's so much easier to make someone else's big decisions... I am horrible at my own. : (

  • my parents do live in the same development as we do...we thought that was going to be a good thing, but they are driving me crazy. My grandparents are in CT, brother in NJ, and all of DH's family is in PA. We think our future children might have a better sense of family if we move up there, too

     decisions, decisions...

  • I would also take the trip. Free tickets to Europe will prop never happen for you again. Yes you might be spending money instead of saving it if you take the trip but.... so what if you have to stay one more month to save. I know when you decided to move back you want to do it now but i think this is something that someday you will be glad you did together!! Keep us update :) P.S PA will be there when you get back.

  • Hi there!

Here's my 2 cents....I went to Europe last year, and it really is not something to pass up. Truthfully, even if you put your house up for sale today, it'd take months for you to move up there. If you are worrying about spending money on the trip, then maybe doing a cruise in Europe would be a good compromise. Use the tickets to fly there and back, but take a cruise the whole time! Then you'll only have to pay for excursions....you'll get to see more of Europe that way!

     Good luck!

I never thought about a cruise! I'm going to look into that - thanks!

  • If it were me, I'd definitely go to Europe. About ten years ago, I had an opportunity to go to London and I turned it down. I've never had a shot at going to Europe since then, and to this day, I still regret not going on that trip! :-(
  • I haven't read through the replies yet, but here are my thoughts:

If you really want to get back north quickly - then sell the tickets, pocket as much money as possible and make it happen.

If you really think this trip is a once in a life time opportunity - something you might not get to do again for many years if kids/jobs/life gets in the way - then push back your relocation date and enjoy the trip. Pushing back the relocation date gives you more time to save and enjoy the trip and life. That way you can reap the benefits of it and not feel guilty about it.

Best of luck to you! We'd love to buy, especially in your neighborhood - but unless you are going through foreclosure, then it's out of price range :)

  • Sure! If you need any recommendations, or help with private tours, i'm your girl!!

  • I think I would opt for the trip. A free trip to Europe is probably a once in a lifetime thing.
  • 11 years ago in college I student taught in England and had time to travel Europe and I loved it. If I had free tickets to go back I so would. I want to move from FL back up north too, but I would def not pass up the Europe thing!
