Hi! My name is Angela, my DH and I currently live in Hershey, PA (so that makes me a central PA nestie) and I have a few questions for you. My DH and I are possibly relocating to Portland in the near future. He would be working at the OHSU Primate Center in Beaverton and I at OHSU on Marquam Hill. So what I would like to know is where would you recommend we'd look for apartments to rent? I'm trying to figure out all the areas/communities online, and I just want to hear from the people who live there. Any info is appreciated. TIA
Re: Hi Ladies.
We live in Bethany neighborhood and it's beautiful and safe. Anything in Beaverton or West Portland (Washington County) is good. I would try to stay away from Aloha.
Also, stay away from Gresham. It's a long commute and not a good place to live, at all.
Tanasbourne area is really nice with good access to highway 26 and lots of rental communities.
You can PM me if you want more specifics or specific names of communities. I've been apartment shopping for my aunt who is moving here this summer and we have quite a list of places to look at!
Craigslist is also a great source to find rental homes and condos - seems like there are tons of condos for rent right now.
Good luck!! And welcome (soon!) to Portland!!
I work near the primate center myself and live near Washington Square mall. The commute for me is pretty easy since most other traffic was in the other direction. DH used to work in downtown Portland and he'd take 99W into town and that wasn't too bad either.
You can def. look in the Bethany area, or near St. Vincent's / Sunset or even the Tanasbourne area. But if one of you had to commute to "the hill" as OHSU Marquam campus is called, the traffic on 26 is quite slow in the mornings.
Or you can check out NW Portland and see fi you can find a nice apt. in Goose Hollow or near PSU. That way either one of you could easily take public transit to work. DH used to have an apartment at the far end of the south park blocks near PSU and it was a decent apartment. And I used to live in NW Portland on 21st and Everett.

I think it also depends on what your looking for...
I'm new to Portland and moved up here in October. I'm lucky in that I didn't have to find a place to live before I made the jump for California. I came here and had a few weeks to look around to see what area I'd like to live in. I work lin the Tanasbourne area, and ended up finding a place that is right down the street from my work. It's so nice living so close to work. for a few weeks I was commuting down to the Tigard/Tualatin area which wasn't great traffic wise (the 217 S sucks).
Area's I loved are the NorthEast (across the river) which has cute pocket neighborhoods like Irvington, Alberta, and Piedmont. But...it was hard for me to find something A. in our price range. and B. that allowed pets. Area's in the "suburbs" that I looked into were Tanasbourne, Bethany, Rock Creek, and Orenco Station. If we weren't going to live downtown, it was important for us to live near the MAX (train/trolley) and now we do which I LOVE!

Actually, there are nice areas of Gresham. I'm living near old town Gresham right now, and there are a lot of nice houses, cute shops, and good resturants. I still prefer inner NE (Hollywood/Irvington/Alameda) because that's where I grew up, but it's so expensive that we chose to live out here instead. Fairview Village (near Gresham) is cute. The commute from Gresham is not bad at all. It takes me 15 minutes to get downtown, 30 minutes if there is bad traffic. I would actually stay away from Beaverton. The traffic sucks and the people are b!tches. The only negative thing to living in Gresham is the lack of "alternative" grocery stores like Trader Joes or Whole Foods.
I live in Beaverton.. and while yes, the traffic can suck.. I like to think we're not all bitches
The only reason why Gresham is a no-no is because the crime rate is SO high. They are #1 for meth production and distribution right now, too. Houses are cute and restaurants are great out there, but it's turning into the new "ghetto" as North Portland becomes more and more gentrified. (Statistically speaking...)
I lived in/near Gresham from 1987 until 2002.. I can honestly say, I'd never live near there again .. Which is kind of sad, because I actually REALLY liked my high school (David Douglas).. Just hate the neighborhoods around it. One of my best friends works for a school in the Reynolds School District and even SHE won't send her kids to their schools. She uses her parents address to keep them in the DD district. My mom lives out that way and whenever we go to visit, we just shake our heads because the area is just still so run down.. I'd take the traffic any day to know I live in a nice, safe neighborhood.
I didn't know you went to DD?! I went to Centennial and lived in Gresham for 9+ years. My dad still lives there, and has a horrible time with crime in his neighborhood and at his place of business (he works in downtown Gresham).
See, of course we aren't b!tches because we used to live in Gresham!

There are links to neighborhood info sites, etc you might find useful
Small world! I actually went to Centennial Middle School for 8th grade, and then to Centennial High School for half of my junior year of high school... I hated it and transferred back to DD as soon as I could DH has 2 friends that went to Centennial and graduated I think in 96..
Thank you everyone for all of the ideas and suggestions, I'm very grateful. We're coming out at the end of January to tour the labs where we would do research etc, and we will have a few days at the end of our trip to look around the area, so this helps a lot.
Hope everyone has a fun and safe New Years Eve!
For real? Way to make friends on the board...
Portland has bad traffic everywhere...I'm from Beaverton and I'm only a biitch sometimes, not always. If she is going to be working at the Primate Center, it's right on 185th Ave, I would live in Tanasbourne area, nice easy commute.
