My mom is in town, and last night she was told me about this totally bizarre post office mix up that happened to her last month. Here's what happened...
Mom wrote a check to the city for their water bill. A couple of weeks later, the city sends her the bill again saying she sent in the payment coupon but not the check. Mom thinks, that's weird, but since the check hadn't cleared she assumed she just forgot to stick it in there and then it was lost/thrown out. She writes another check and sends it off. Done.
About a week or so later, she gets a call from a lady in NC. The lady had just received a card from her friend in MN. Inside the sealed envelope, inside the card, was my mom's check to the city. Her friend in MN does not work for the city, does not work for any billing agencies that contract with the city, does not work for the post office, and did not include a check in the card for her NC friend.
So I guess the lesson here is if you're paying a bill with a check, make sure your envelope is sealed. Anything can happen at the post office.

That is really weird.
We do every single payment for every monthly bill online. Here's hoping that's the safest route!

I used to make my rent payment by directly depositing into their bank account. A small pain but atleast I knew it was there and on time
Wierd. Not what I wanted to hear today since my $600 package from Amazon shows as delivered but isn't here. The post office said they left it somewhere, but can't confirm where.
Somehow, your mom's story does not surprise me in the least.
At least the water company called her... mine woulda just turned my water off! :-p
