One more handbag question (sorry!)

Soo what is this about Coach not being considered designer? Someone mentioned that in a previous post the other day. It's not? I always thought it was... fek, it sure is expensive enough to be designer IMO.

So what makes a handbag designer or not designer? (Can you tell I'm a total rookie at this?)

Re: One more handbag question (sorry!)

  • It's all relative.  Some people think of Coach as designer and high-end, others don't.  I think Coach gets a bad rap on the FB board and other boards, but I still think a lot of their simple/non-logo leather goods are made well and can be really attractive.

Not really sure what makes a certain brand designer or not, everyone has their different thressholds.  Some think that Nine West and Liz Claiborne, Steve Madden, are designer, I don't really think so.

When I think of designer I think more of Kooba, Bulga, Rebecca Minkoff, Botkier, sometimes Cole Haan, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Chloe, Dior, YSL, Hermes, blah blah blah.  There's just varying levels of luxury among all of those.

  • To the person who carries a Birkin bag, Coach is not designer.

To the person who buys her handbags at Ross, Coach is designer.

  • Coach isn't designer. It's really a bridge brand. Mid priced, not as much wow factor.

When I think designer bags, I think YSL, Fendi, etc.

If Coach were a car I'd consider it an Acura as opposed to a Ferrari or a Aston Martin.   Nice car, but not as rare as the other two.

I think the other ladies explained it but I second D on their simple/non-logo leather goods. I have several pieces (wallets, wristlets/makeup bags, a pill case, sunglasses case) that were their plain leather series that have held up so well (in some cases 9+ years and still going strong). I have way more Coach bags than I care to mention (most were hand-me-downs from my mom who'd carry them maybe two weeks and then was over them) but I still carry my first plain leather bag from Coach often since it's aged beautifully and is still going strong.

  • I think the problem is Coach is too mainstream. It seems EVERY teenage girl in America has one of their logo bags. I hate obviously-branded handbags (I'm looking at you, Louis Vuitton).

I do like their leather bags, but have never purchased one.

::raising hand:: I have no shame.

  • I tend to think of Coach as "entry level designer", if that makes any sense. I have a couple Coach leather bags and my mom has a classic one from the 80s. All of them have held up very well through time (my mom's) and heavy use (mine). Some of their older signature patterns were tolerable, but the recent signature stuff is hids for the most part.

FWIW, a lot of Macy's stores carry Coach so you could put you return towards something ...

    Oh, me too.

I have an H&M bag that I colored in with Sharpie when it started to peel.

The bag I have right now, my mom bought for me at Ross.

Ross usually has some great finds like Kenneth  Cole stuff. It's almost like a scavenger hunt every time I shop there.

  • classic coach leather

an alternate b. makowsky (i vote in black or midnight)

cute betsey johnson that looks uber functional and just edgy enough.  (too bad there's a heart lock thingy on it.)

very yummy leather.  they had it on gilt groupe the other day, and i was considering it, but it sold out quick.  and yeah, a little extra...just a little. ;)

vintagey but not too vintage.  again, it'll require extra investment. i prefer it in black.

i think you posted this one before.  conservative, but classic. not my fave, but it'll do.

conservative, but furla's leather is usually pretty nice.  and could be fun in red, even for every day.

    and finally a bonus:
    for the guidette in you

  • Tater - you're either bored or you LOVE shopping for handbags.  lol.

  • i'm...
    1. procrastinating
    2. love shopping for handbags.  i'm also narrowing down my choices for my exchange.  unforch, my exchange-to-be is worth less than fitty's.  luckily, i'm looking more for a small clutch or crossbody.

  • Tater you're the best :)
