Turns out Samson has ringworm. Yuck. He's now quarantined in a large crate until he's better.
Our appointment was at 4:20 today and they did a bunch of tests and checked his ears for mites which came back negative. The took some samples of the legions on his skin and sent them out for cultures but did the light test and it did glow green. We found legions on both ears, his belly and 2 of his legs. I have a lotion that I have to put on him twice a day and I have a medicated shampoo that I have to use on him twice a week. Plus I have to treat both dogs with the shampoo (but only once a week) to try to head off any infection they may have but aren't showing yet.
The vet thinks that since it takes 2 to 4 weeks to show the legions that Samson probably had ringworm when we adopted him 2 weeks ago and just wasn't showing symptoms yet. So he's been running around the house with this fungus on him - fantastic. I've spent the evening trying to disinfect the house with bleach as much as I can and I've been washing any soft surface I can put into the washing machine. Tomorrow I will bust out my carpet cleaner and clean the carpets and furniture.
I also have to call the pediatrician to find out if we need to do anything for the girls because they have most definitely been exposed to it although they don't show any symptoms at the moment. I'm going to call the rescue as well since Samson was in a room with about 30 other cats that are probably infected as well.
This is so not how I wanted to start my new year! Thanks for the advice and suggestions in my other post ladies - I really appreciate it.
Re: F/U to my cat question
Awww, that stinks! At least you found out right away, instead of having to wait for a culture.
FWIW, I was exposed to ringworm a bazillion times when I worked at the vet, and neither me, or anyone I worked with ever got it. Just keep an eye on the girls, and make sure the wash exposed skin really well during bath time. Luckily during the winter people are more covered up, so its harder to catch from skin exposure.
Here's hoping the next couple weeks go by quickly and without any additional issues!

I thought it was ringworm, based on your symptoms described. I've rescued several cats with this and I've NEVER gotten it- I wasn't even told to quarantine the cats- so they ran around my house while being treated. Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after putting on his lotion and bathing (or wear rubber gloves.)
I'm glad it was an "easy" problem like ringworm causing the sores- and not due to a behavioral issue like obsessive licking (which isn't treated with just a lotion.) The girls should be fine too, and if they DO get ringworm, it's MUCH easier, and faster, to treat in humans than it is in cats. I really wouldn't worry about carpet cleaning, etc. except around his known sleeping/hanging out areas (unless you REALLY feel like doing your "spring cleaning" now.) The rescue probably knows about the infestation already, but it's nice of you to call and warn them.
I hope you have a great New Year, and Kitty heals quickly.
