XP: Visiting the suburbs...a ?

Hi. I am from Indiana but will be visiting my in-laws in Aurora next week. We will be going to the Museum of Science and Industry and are trying to figure out the smartest/cheapest way to get there. We could drive, which of course would take gas money and parking money $16. Or, we could take the Metra train from Aurora to Union Station then take a cab or bus. We have a 7 year old and a 2 year old so I have to keep that in mind too. Any advice for me? Last time we visited the city, we took a bus from Union station to the Shedd with a 5 year old. Thanks!

Re: XP: Visiting the suburbs...a ?

  • The Metra (express, if you can find one) is definitely going to be the quickest way downtown (avoiding traffic and parking), but I think it's $5 per adult for the weekend pass (back and forth, I believe). I'm unsure of what the kids' price is, but it would be on the Metra web site.

If you can catch an express Metra, you only stop in Naperville, then downtown without all the little stops in between.

Cost-wise, it probably isn't much different if you Metra or park downtown, in all honesty. The train could be a fun trip for the kids, but you are at the whim of the train schedule and can't just up and leave when you want if the kids are 'done' for the day at any point.

The nice thing is that if you drive from Aurora, you just get on 88-East and it's a straight shot to 290 to get right downtown in about 40 minutes on any given weekend.

  • You are much better off driving. That museum is way south of union station. By the time you pay for the train, cabs there and back etc, you will pay quite a bit. You might even be ok paying for a 2nd spot to go shopping/eating.
  • Thanks ladies Smile We are visiting the museum next Friday so no weekend discounts for the train anyway. I also talked to a friend from the area who recommended driving. Thanks again!!
