Buying Club?!?!

One of our family resolutions for 2010 is to be more green, so I've been lurking on this board and need some help....

Can someone please explain to me what a buying club is?  It's something that a regional farm has in our town and I'm guessing it's like a CSA but am not sure. It looks to also be for organic meats...does this sound right?

Re: Buying Club?!?!

  • Welcome!! I swear we are usually more responsive, and the board is usually more active, but I think people aren't answering because we don't know. As far as I know 'buying club' isn't a defined, common term like a CSA.

CSA stands for community-supported agriculture. You buy a share of a farm, and get shares of the produce. This helps small farms stay in business because they get money up front to run, and have guaranteed customers.

A buying club is just a general term for a group that has come together to use greater buying power. If you are asking about a specific group near you, which it sounds like, I think you'll have to look into that more specifically to find out how they run.

There's lots of great info here and we have lots of great discussions so I hope you'll stick around!

  • If you have a local cooperative food store around you look into their buying clubs. Some Co-ops don't require membership (I work for one like that), but allow buying in bulk at significantly reduced rates to all who need/want to shop. Also, they can guide you to local buying clubs.

    Great idea, buying clubs!

  • Thanks for your help. I emailed the farm asking for more information too. I like the idea of looking for a local co-op...I'm on to that now! :-)
