Poll: landline phone service?

If you have a landline, whose service do you use and do you like it?

I need a landline b/c I take call the the hospital, so I can't rely on my cell alone.SadSo....... I have BellSouth b/c that type of connection seems to be the most reliable, but it's expensive and the customer service is mediocre.

I'm hoping that one day another type of connection like digital will be reliable (or not have to take call anymore and lose the landline altogether) What about you ladies?

Re: Poll: landline phone service?

  • I dont have a landline anymore for exactly those reasons.  I have Vonage and have for almost 2 years.  I have had no problems at all and its cheap.
  • We have Bellsouth. I switched to Vonage about 4 years ago but it messed up my alarm system. We just have the basic phoneline and it is like $20/mo. If you "must have it for work purposes" you can write it off!
  • We have a landline, I think it's comcast.   But we've been looking into Vonage too.
  • I don't have one now, but I've had both Sprint and BellSouth...BellSouth's was much more reliable (but I may be biased, since I used to work for Sprint and hated my job!)
  • We used to have vonage....we got tired of there "service" so we switched to Bright House....I am not sure what we pay for the phone-line since we have our cable, internet and phone through them.

  • I take call also and I use a pager.  Why not do that?  Pagers don't have all the weird issues cellphones do.  You never have to charge them and the batteries last forever.  And none of that someone-calls-you-but-your-phone doesn't-ring nonsense, I always get my pages.  You just get a page in the middle of the night and then call them back on your cell.  At that point you can tell if you batteries is low on your cell and plug it in.  Just a thought.

Other than that, we don't have a landline, so I can't help.

Layne - ehh, I do have a hospital issue-pager, but it doesn't work everywhere. They're cheap and no one relies on it.

I never thought of getting my own - how expensive would the service be?

(Heyyyyyyy- I can quote again! Hopefully no multiple posts this time)

  • Sorry, I have no clue how much a pager would be.  Mine is the hospital-issued one.  I wouldn't think it would cost more than maybe $10/month.
  • We use Bellsouth. We probably wouldn't have a land line either except that we have a home alarm system that requires us to have it. I'm just too chicken to not have the alarm b/c of all of the weirdos out there. Sad

  • We have Embarq right now.  They are reliable, but ridiculously expensive.  When we move, we're going to do the basic phone service from AT&T/Bellsouth, which is about $14 a month, and just add on the caller ID for an extra $9 a month.  That's it.  Eventually, we may go to an internet phone service, but not until they are more reliable in hurricanes/power outages/etc.
  • Embarq. I can honestly say I will never get rid of my landline. As much as I love my cellphone, I don't want to talk on it for long periods of time and I like the fact that my DH and I can have a conversation with his mom and not have to deal with speaker phone or three way calling.

I also have cut WAY back on my cell usage -- if the top neurosurgeons in the country limit their cell use . . . it is a good idea you should to. (If you don't already know my story . . . trust me when I say "extra radiation to my head is NOT what I need!")

Anyway, we are fine with Embarq and don't find them to be crazy expensive.
