RE: 28yo mother who died

In reference to the article linked below from the Union Leader ... let me just say this. While it is a TERRIBLE, sad, awful thing to happen (and I will never minimize that) let's remember that this is one side to a story. Her friend is quoted throughout, and she is a grieving friend, of course she's going to remember the great things. What she isn't is a medical professional who has the details of the infection and death.

Please don't be scared of this ladies! While there are serious risks with c/s, they are actually small. Yes, there is always a chance of infection but we do have some amount of control over our risk factors.

Things like maintaining a healthy weight, controlling our blood pressure, diabetes, all these things will make for a healthier pregnancy and delivery.

Without breaking medical confidentiality, I will just say that when you are terribly unhealthy you are at a much higher risk for complications during pregnancy and delivery. Healing is much harder for a sick body.

My heart is with Zion and his family during this very difficult time.

  • Ah Melissa, this is why I love you.  You're so grounded and objective.

I really feel for Crissy and Jeanette for whom this story hits a little too close to home, I really do, (and I understand why it is hard for them) but I like hearing an objective POV from a member of the medical profession, too.

  • I absolutly agree with pp just wanted to add my experience.  I too contracted a staph infection after my second c-section.  It took 3 different anti biotics and lots of rest but it eventually cleared up (it took about 3 weeks though).

  • Thanks for posting this Melissa. I think its important for everyone to realize that theres a different side here.  I'd also like to add that infections, if caught soon enough are easily treatable.  In this case its not the infection that killed her, it was the blood clot caused by surgery...
  • Thanks for the perspective ladies!  I developed a staph infection (due to my PICC line) while pg.  Luckily, it was caught early & a few days of IV antibiotics, 2 weeks of oral & removal of the line cleared it up.
