buying chicken in the supermarket?

do any big supermarkets carry chicken that I can trust is non GMO, cage free, no antibiotics, etc? I know not to buy perdue or tyson. But my market has a lot of other names, some that are labeled with stuff that make them sound safe, but how do I know for sure? also just because chicken is at trader joes or whole foods, that doesn't guarantee its OK right?

Re: buying chicken in the supermarket?

  • Just BARE Chicken - each package comes with a code to the family farm that it originated from.  You can go to their website, type in the code, and learn about the farm.
  • Great question-- I went to our grocey store looking for chicken for the first time in about a month (we watched Food, Inc. and I haven't been able to even think about eating meat/chicken again until now).  I looked and looked and found nothing even romotely safe.  It's too bad because I'm willing to pay more, and I bet others are too. I've never seen Bare chicken around here, but I'll keep my eyes out.  Glad to know I'm not the only one have difficulties.

  • We gave up on the big supermarket near us because we just couldn't trust what they sold.  DH gets his chicken from the co-op near us that we've been able to verify is good and all other meat from the farmer's market.  You could try looking on the local harvest website - type in "meat" and your city/zip code and it should give you farms nearby.

  • Most Whole Foods have certified cage-free/cruelty free chickens, as do some of the other major grocery stores. You'll pay through the nose for it.

Your best bet, though, is to find a local farm through a co-op or  farmers' market.

    Or check this website:

  • Buy from your local Farmer's Market.  Talk to the farmer, ask how their raise their chickens and if they use hormones, antibiotics, and if they're free range.  There's nothing better than learning when your food actually comes from.  You'll never get a straight answer from the chicken package at the grocery store, no matter how hard you look or how much you spend.

  • Have you looked for Smart Chicken?  I have tried them and I do like it better than the other kinds.
  • I second Smart Chicken, it's the best I've found in the supermarket, and I think the taste is better than the organic Trader Joe's. You can go to their website to find a retailer near you.
