New and pregnant - help me get more green!

So, I've been trying to be more green for the past year or so, and I think we do a pretty good job. We try to purchase and do things green as possible, but I find that so many organic products are soo expensive.  I'm looking to replace my body care products and am looking for some specific suggestions on moderately priced face wash and face lotion since I can't use any of my typical products being pregnant (can't use saliyic acid or acne treatment type products).

I'd love suggestions on where you shop for your body care products and what you do or do not recommend.

TIA!

  • Book: Raising Baby Green - This is a must buy.  You can get it really cheap at Half.com.  Tons of tips in here...easy read.

I'm a big burt's bees fan, but I suggest starting with the trial kits to get in with each of it.  It's readily available at Target which is nice for green cosmetic newbies.

Cleaning products are another area I suggest changing over.  I'm in love with Seventh Generation (also available at Target).  For Laundry Detergent, I buy Crunchy Clean on Etsy and I love it.

When you look quickly, some items maybe look more expensive, but you likely find that you get to use less of the product or it helps save money in other areas longer term.  Plus, the sustainability is a huge thing.

I was always pretty eco-friendly, but I kicked it into high gear when I got pregnant and I can't imagine looking back. :)

    Good luck & welcome!

  • I make most of my own stuff.  I do get GudonyaToo shampoo and Kiss My Face conditioner, but for face wash I use Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (which I also use as body wash with some Coconut Oil), tea tree oil, and the Oil Cleansing Method.  You can also try some Burt's Bees for face wash/body/hair care.

As for cleaning products, try making your own.  There are a ton of recipes out there, just Google what you want.  Search "Make your own all purpose cleaner" for some great ideas.  Though Vinegar, Baking Soda, Dr. Bronner's, and Water are the best things out there for cleaning!

Also if you're going to be painting a new nursery make sure you get VOC free paint, even if you're not the one who's doing the painting.  And look into cloth diapering for when your LO arrives.

  • If you have ready access to a washer and dryer, you should definitely look into using cloth diapers when your LO arrives.  If you go  to the Eco-Friendly Family board on the bump, they have a ton of info on there.

  • I really like the Avalon Organics line of personal care products. We use their Lavender shampoo, conditioner, and facial scrub.  DH is allergic to SLS, so we've been really happen with their products.  Plus they have no animal ingredients, and no animal testing which is really important to the both of us.

I agree about using Cloth Diapers (CD) for your LO.  Also breastfeeding. Most formula containers and bottles have BPA, and many formulas have HFCS.

  • I highly recommend the book "RAISING BABY GREEN" - lots of great info from prenatal to post delivery.  Many recommendations for skin care and other things.

The organic pregnany is a good book too.

I personally like the avalon organics skin care line.
