School employees - certificate of physical fitness?

Anybody on here working in a school system?  Any insight on this physical and TB test I have to get done as required by Illinois school code?  Do I just call up a doctor's office and see if they'll do it?  (I'm new to the state, no doctor as yet).  What is the doctor supposed to do?  Is it a full physical or just whatever they need to determine that I can "perform the duties assigned"?  And I have to pay for this out of my own pocket?  How much is it going to run me?  As you can see, lots of questions, so any insight would be appreciated.  TIA!

Re: School employees - certificate of physical fitness?

  • I don't know about the physical (although I do have to find out myself ASAP so I can get my substitute certificate) but I know that you can go to your county health department for your TB test.  Will County has their own TB clinic where they do the test for you.  Look into that, and check out your local Regional Office of Education website or give them a call.  They should be able to tell you what you need for your physical.
  • It was a long time ago, but I just went to a clinic in my neighborhood because I knew it would be cheaper than my reg. dr. All they do is some very simple tests, weight, height, look in your ears, etc. The main thing is the TB test which is also very quick. Hope that helps!
  • When I had my physical I just went to my PCP, my district let me wait until my insurance started with them.  Not all districts will do that though.  As far as the TB test I went to the health Department and it was like $15 dollars.
  • My district gave me a short list of outpatient care centers that they work with, so I just chose one and went there - no expense to me. When I subbed, I was able to get my TB test done with one of the school nurses (again, no cost).

Maybe call up your district's HR department and see what they would suggest? GL!
