Fitness clubs... opinion?

Hey ladies,

DH and I are looking at joining a gym, and the nearest one to us is an LA Fitness (Rowlett).   Would like to know what you think about them, horror stories and rave reviews, as well as what they like to charge monthly and all.  We've never been the gym-going type, but we need to join one now, heh.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Fitness clubs... opinion?

  • We pay $32.39/month each (LAFitness).  Forgot how much enrollment was.  And if you have kids and will use the daycare, it's a little more.

I like it.  They're mostly new, clean.  I don't like the pushy trainers/managers (do not do the "free" personal trainer deal unless you are seriously considering signing up or are a hardass that doesn't mind rejecting hard sales.)  Seems like the turnover is high, so that's not good.  I've liked most of the classes I've done, but now I mostly use it for the treadmill when it's cold!

Turnover is high because they treat their employees like dirt. Both of my brothers turned to LA Fitness for work after leaving the military and they both got screwed over. I can't imagine that customers are treated any differently.

  • what other gyms do they have out in the Rowlett/Rockwall area?  We're moving up there in July.  Do they have a Lifetime up there?

  • Hey I'm usually just a lurker here, but I actually have an opinion on this one! I've been a member of LA fitness in Euless for over a year and the one in grand prairie before that and I absolutely love it. They're so clean, which I love and its cheaper than Lifetime, which I also love. Every employee I talk to (only at the front desk and a few of the class teachers) are awesome, but maybe I just found a good location.

Anyway, just wanted to throw in my two cents :)

  • I love 24 hour fitness.  I've been a member there for about 10 years and I think their classes and trainers are more advanced than what I've seen at LA Fitness.  We are looking at moving to Lifetime since it's much closer to our house but if I had a 24 hour close to me, I'd just stay there!
  • PS I agree with PP about classes at 24 hour. They are better than the ones at LA Fitness
  • La Fitness has worked well for me because of the price...$32 a month, it has locations throughout the metroplex and I have not had any bad experiences with the staff at the clubs i have been to. If price is no object then i would recommend Lifetime, they are about double what Lafitness charges and everyone I know that is a member loves it.

  • I really do not recommend LA Fitness.  This company is more about money rather than people.  The sales people lie to the customers continuously and will just say anything to get you to buy a membership.  If you are looking for a more family/people friendly place I highly suggest the YMCA if there is one nearby.  This is a great gym that I have always had a great experience with and the people there actually care about their customers.  Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the valuable input, everyone.  I really appreciate it.

Pkate98 - there's a Lifetime at Firewheel Towne Center.  I live smack in the middle of Rowlett, and it's about 15 mins away.  That's the nearest one to the Rowlett/Rockwall area.
