PS3 Vs. Wii

My husband and I cant decided if we want a ps3 or a wii. What do you ladies think? we already have a BR player, but he wants the ps3 for madden and Final Fantasy when it comes out, and we couldnt play it that much. With the Wii we know we would use it when we have guest over (which isnt a lot) and I think I would use it more, but its not as amazing as a PS3, we walked around Best Buy for at least an hour tonight trying to decide, I think we are going to sleep on it though!

Re: PS3 Vs. Wii

  • The PS3 and Wii are totally different animals, as you've pointed out.

We have both, and the PS3 gets the most use, mostly because of how useful it is as a home media center.  We use it to watch Netflix movies, downloaded shows, and as our primary Blu-Ray/DVD player.

As for games, it entirely depends on what you want it for.  PS3 is mostly for playing solo games and online-only multiplayer games, and have some very good games in my opinion.  They have a few games for in-the-same-room multiplayer (for when friends are over), but they can't hold a candle to the Wii in that department.

As for the Wii being less powerful, that doesn't really mean a lot unless graphics are super important to you.  The Wii has some amazing games out, as well as the ability to download classic Nintendo and Sega games through their virtual console.

I hope that helps with your decision, even though I didn't really give a solid one-or-the-other answer.

  • My son has both and almost never uses his Wii.  He said that Nintendo hasn't come out with enough interesting games (for his interests) for a long time.  His PS3 gets a lot more use than his Wii.  He likes action games (Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc) and likes to play online with his friends.

I think it all depends on the games he's interested in and which system will have more games that are in line with his interests.

This. PS3 is definitely the more serious gamer's console, where the Wii is a cutesy, fun social game console. We have a PS3 and are very happy with it, if that matters.

  • We had a PS3 and a Wii, and traded in the Wii.  We just never used it, and the games aren't as good as the ones on PS3.

I'd agree for the most part, but whether the games are better or not depends on what sort of games you are looking for.  If you like solo-play games, first-person shooters, that sort of thing, then PS3 is the way to go.  If you like party games or old-school Nintendo games, then the Wii is the way to go.

  • We use our Wii so much, just DH and I and also when we have people over, but we just love playing the interactive games like ping pong and bowling. I get motion sickness from most of the real games on PS3 and Xbox, so when we get a PS3, it'll mostly be for blu-ray with the option to play PS3 games if we really wanted to.

  • PS3.

  • We have all three consoles and almost never use any of them, since we're never home, but I agree with everyone here, if you are a serious gamer, get the PS3 and if you are a casual gamer, get the Wii.  The only thing that I can add is that the Wii can play gamecube games, so if there are any that you would like to play you could.
  • We had a Wii, but we sold it and used the money towards a PS3. We played the Wii quite a bit when we first got it, but then it went untouched for months. I am very happy we got the PS3 - we use it for netflix and blue ray movies every single day. It was is first blue ray player and ohmygosh I didn't realize my 1080 TV could look that nice. I have heard its one of the best blue ray players on the market, but I don't know if it's actually true.
  • Have you considered the xBox 360? Everyone I know with a Wii never plays it. It is really best if you have kids. The xBox 360 is by far the best console for adults. It supports a wide range of games, more and more of which are becoming exclusive to the xBox. It's got a ton of party games, online and "couch" co-op, and single-player adventure style games (I am also a FF fan).  My husband and I play often. If you like the motion-controls of the Wii, you should check out the upcoming Project Natal from xBox. It uses a camera to record your own body's movements, eliminating the obnoxious "nunchuck" controllers that have a tendency to go flying off your arm. As for the PS3, I pose this question to you: Why pay for the Blu-Ray if you already have it? If you buy your console from Best Buy, get their damage plan. They will replace it for you for free and even reimburse you the difference in cost from when you purchased the item.
